sundering weapon mod on casters
Does it work?
A 600tank monk wielding a totem axe (which has 20% armor penetration) with the smiting enchantments of a smiter (that would be Retribution and Holy Wrath) doesnt get more damage output, right?
I was wondering if it makes a difference whether I use a sundering axe or any an axe with any other prefix but the same suffix and inscription.

The effect of a sundering mod only affects attacks.

Okay, but assuming it also works on attack skills (melee ones at least) does it also work on caster attack skills, let say with flare as example? Or does the axe really has to hit the target, in other words, it only works on melee?
Sorry if the question is a bit stupid

"Sundering is a weapon upgrade that grants a 10-20% chance of having an additional 20% armor penetration added to attacks."
Now, look at attacks. "An attack is performed whenever your weapon is swung or launched at an opponent. Selecting an enemy and pressing Spacebar (if you're using a default key configuration) will cause you to attack. Melee weapons attacking are represented by them being swung, and ranged weapons are represented by projectiles being thrown towards the enemy."
It's restricted to "attacks" and "attack skills".
Regarding Flare, there is no such thing as "caster attack spells" (according to game mechanics). Spells are not considered attacks.

Ah, lol. I always considered any direct damaging spell an attack. Must be something stuck on my logic from other games I play/played.
Thanks alot!

You must hit the target with the weapon to get the damage bonus.

No problem!
But, yeah. Guild Wars game mechanics don't consider it an attack.
...Maybe because it hurts worse.

If I recall, you can do damage (attack) while 600ing, so I suppose the Sundering axe mod could increase the melee damage of the axe. But, it won't affect the damage from the enchantments.

if you are feeling squishy in RA, you could run the following build and the sundering would come in quite handy.
Ele/ Warrior
+14Air, +12Axe
Shell Shock
Ride the lightning (e)
Conjure Lightning
... add axe skills here and other air stuff ...
yes... then you will get the advantage of cracked armour reducing armour, the added bonus of Conjure lightning and the 20% sundering. a 15^50 would also help and of course customising it would add some extra dmg too (but no one really customises weapons i beleive).
---
EDIT. oops... that wouldn;t work. you need to have a lightning mod on your axe and the 20% sundering woulnd;t work. unless its a rare gold that has it inherent and you can also add a lightning mod... is that possible with dual modded golds?

It also wouldn't work because, as far as I know, the armor penetration only affects the base damage of the weapon, not damage from other skills such as Conjures.
