Default I have made a ranger.

I have made a ranger starting in Nightfall, I have a few questions, for instance if I use a fiery bowstring, conjure flame barrage and ignite arrows all at once, would all the effects apply? Would one of the skills remove ignite arrows? Also what kind of bow should I get as a newb ranger/ what build should I try and aim for? I plan on dealing damage and maintaining survivor.

Thanks in advance guys.

I suggest reading the descriptions on the skills. For example:

Barrage - Elite Bow Attack. All your Preparations are removed. Shoot arrows at up to 6 foes adjacent to your target. These arrows strike for +1...13...16 damage if they hit.

Notice the part where it says all your preparations are removed? Well.

Ignite Arrows - Preparation. For 24 seconds, your arrows explode on contact, dealing 3...15...18 fire damage to target and all adjacent foes.

So no, some effects won't apply. Ignite Arrows is a preparation and it will be removed once you use Barrage. However, I think conjure flame and a fiery bowstring probably would work. Another favourite that people use is Splinter Weapon + Barrage, which works when you have huge mobs that like sticking together. However, Barrage is not the best choice for most situations, since you'll often be faced with enemies who like to scatter. Burning Arrow is always fun, and an interrupt ranger is very useful in most missions/areas.

If you want to go for survivor, a pet could help you during your first few levels. Pets are great for use as tanks, as long as you're perpared to keep it alive. They also do ok damage with the right skills.
Also, try to take as many defensive skills as you can, like Troll Unguent and Whirling Defence.
