There aren't all that many people hanging around to play with - usually they're doing specific stuff like farms. However, playing with heroes/hench is plenty fun. The daily Zaishen Mission/Bounty (different every time) is always full of peeps, though!
If you don't play Guild Wars now, well, I don't see it getting better after GW2 comes out (which will be some time from now, I'd imagine.)
Yes, once you get max armor (fairly cheap, happens fairly early on) you've got the best armor in the game. You can put different insignias and runes on it to balance yourself between health / energy / etc, but they're not too expensive. Tormented, Obsidian, etc. cost a ton but are just different skins :-)
There are a variety of different weapon effects, but, again, you can get them early on. This was so that the game would be about how well you play rather than how much time you've spent grinding expensive gear.

Your Dervish has to start in Nightfall, but would be able to travel to other campaigns once they reach the Consulate Docks mission in Nightfall, but getting to that point usually doesn't take too long.
It's the same with the other campaigns, too. A Prophecies character can't travel until they reach the city of Lion's Arch, and a Factions character has to get to Kaineng Center. It's usually just a couple of hour's worth of gameplay to get to that point.
As for your secondary profession, try them all out first before you accept any particular one and see which fits your play style. You have the option of changing it later on in any of the campaigns, and honestly you won't be sinking as many attribute points into your secondary as your primary most of the time.

I vote buy it. it will let u learn some of the back story of GW before GW2 comes out and you should be able to manage going through all the campaigns even if you don't play a ton ;-) It will be a long time before GW2 comes out ;-)

Buy Guildwars It's still a great game..
and even when GW2 comes out i imagine people will still be in GW1,
Also Prophicies is The easiest chapter to learn and master playstyles on..
Faction and Nightfall have much steeper learning curves.

Buy the thrilogy, and while you're at it, buy EotN too. GW is a great game, and there will be some time before GW2 is released. At least a year. My guess (note: it's my personal guess) is that GW2 will be released 28th of April 2011, no matter how depressing it sounds (GW2 release speculation thread: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/...ons-t1728.html)
And that is plenty of time to experience GW1.

Buy it, play it to keep you busy and then you can decide if you want GW2 when it comes out later down the road.
It's a great game. Not only you're going to learn what happens before hand, but also you learn of the professions before you enter GW2 (when that time comes).
I'm a caster, I preferably enjoy playing Elementalists, Ritualists and Mesmers out of the 10 professions. Melee is fun every now and then. My favourite melee professions would be Assassin, Ranger, (Either)Paragon or Warrior. They switch off since they're so similar.
If you ever need help with anything you can give me a whisper and we can work on the campaigns together. I've got many characters that are still going through the campaigns and whatnot. Right now I'm getting my Warrior through Prophecies just to get her armor infused and ascended.
Oh, you should also get Eye of the North. It's the most recent game of GW. It's pretty much a filler and a cliffhanger/advertisement for GW2. Getting you ready, but not only that it's got fantastic armors, titles with their own skill-buffs, fantastic weapon skins and extra skills let alone PvE skills that are very helpful. I personally enjoy "Pain Inverter".
But anyway I'm rambling. I hope you join in. Again, you need help, or you want in a guild with a tight-knit Alliance give me a whisper on: Elvira Delfire (Or on whatever character I'm playing at that moment. To keep track of someone it's easier to put them on your friends list. It'll tell you which character they're on that moment.)
