My notes say that on June 14th 2006 the lawyer (Peter J. Willsey) who usually does the trademark registrations for ArenaNet registered guildwarsutopia.com. So we can pin the first draft of the Utopia project around the time Nightfall production was nearing its end. (Which makes sense, since after Nightfall is out the door, Anet has to go to NC to secure funding for working on the next title). One of the earliest rumors was that Gwen from the tutorial was finally coming back. At the same time the Bard class was rumored based on an unused artwork released along Factions. Later in EotN we of course meet Gwen, but we only get a hint at a Bard class in the shape of "the Flaming Lutes".
But in Junes 2006 neither GW2 nor Eye of the North were announced at that time. After all, Nightfall was in the final stages of production. Nightfall still had references to Utopia as it seems, especially towards a vanishing island that might be the hub of time. It took until March 07 until anything leaked so badly Anet HAD to react. Then we were told that Utopia was basically scrapped, not it was called Eye of the North and GW2 war going to reboot the franchise sometime 2009.
On April 11th 2007 BlightedEmpires.com was once again registered by that one lawyer (Peter J. Willsey) doing work for ArenaNet. That entry was refreshed on March 12 2009, so as far as I see it that is the current Project name / subtitle of GW2. The first real activity for the domain itself can be traced to December 18th 2007. That is in line with my other projection about when work on GW2 really began.
So if you think you have been waiting for GW2 too long, I got these four games for you:
