Talking How to kill Doppelganger - Guide to all classes

Note: Some of the skills and strategies in thread have been made obsolete by npc's tendency to move out of AoEs.

There's been quite a lot of threads about how to kill your double during the Ascension, and most of them have been answered before. I put this small guide together for those who don't know how to search for threads which have all the info about beating double.

Necro: Bring skills which will sacrifice life. You won't be using them, but the double will. Just sit still and watch it kill itself. Also, Awaken Blood makes it sacrifice lot more life. So, bring it along, but don't use it.Still works

Monk: Life Attunement and Healing Breeze. DO NOT USE LIFE ATTUNEMENT! It cuts your damage down to fraction of what it was. Let double use it, while you are using your wand/staff to kill it. Use Healing Breeze if you need healing.Still works

Mesmer: Hexbreaker + Empathy + Backfire. Before you step on the last stone, use Hexbreaker, then cast empathy on the double. Renew Hexbreaker and cast Backfire. Then just strafe around it's arrows. Remember to take a few steps back after entering to be able to dodge the arrows better. Can be done without hexbreaker, but it does add to damage and makes the fight quicker.Still works

Ranger: Bring bar full of rituals, and just start to plink at it with your bow while it wastes time on the rituals.Works

Warrior: Just go bash it's head in. Thats the thing you're good at, right? And bring Frenzy with you, for Dopple to use. Makes it faster. No changes here

Elementalist: Meteor Shower, Firestorm, Aura of Restoration + flare. Remember to move out of AoE-spells when double casts them on you. Before stepping on that last stone, cast Aura, then MS on double, then FS. And then at your leisure just flare it to death. No longer works, as double will move out of the way.

Hope this helps some people who might be stuck against the double. Any errors, omissions, typos, mistakes in grammar.. Post on the thread, and I'll try to correct them.

This way worked for me and i killed them within 10 seconds.

Elementalist: Just take Meteor Shower. Your double doesnt use it and doesnt move so it will be over very quickly.

For monks: crank up smiting and bring holy wrath and retribution. Then cast them right before you activate the mesa.

For everyone: Bring long casting useless spells that you won't use, then bring one or two good damage spells, and spam those while the mirror is using the long-casting spells.
For Rangers: bring Spirits, don't bring pets, as they don't come with you.
For Mesmers: bring ethereal burden- gives you 3 seconds of no damage to you, or bring empathy and dodge his arrows.
For Elementalists: bring Meteor shower as he doesn't move, and you can dodge his shower
For Necromancers: Bring useless sacrifice spells and if you are a N/Mo bring scourge sacrifice. Insidious parisite, Malaise, Price of Failure, and Spiteful Spirit are good too.
For Warrior: I guess just go all out. Bring Frenzy, but don't use.
For Monk: If you are a monk/Necro get some sacrifice spells (don't use them) and scourge sacrifice. If something else, use the tactics of the secondary or read the posts above mine.

Angry Uber-Doppleganger!

It doesn't work for one of my characters, an Elementalist/Mesmer. My doppleganger has a bow for ranged attacks, an axe for melee attacks and all spells in my spell slots!

I'm pretty mad about this because this is DEFINITELY NOT a mirror of my character.

grrrr

All the mirrors have an axe and a bow, that doesn't change.

The only thing he mirrors is your abilities.
Use Meteor storm and ethereal burden and move around so you don't get hit because of meteor storm.

I played as a R/E, brought meteor shower, then a bunch of arrow skills, and after the meteors wore off, he was about half health, then we just went all out on eachother.

Mesmers have it easy. A level 3 mesmer can beat the doppel.

Put a nice big empathy on him and dodge his arrows. Over in no time. If you want to speed it up you can drop a big area damage spell on him, just move out of it if he does it to you. Mes/Necro has even more fun, as you put empathy and insidious parasite up and enfeeble him, and just stand there. You break even roughly in life, he takes a pile every time he swings. It's laughably easy. You can add some sacrifice spells to make it faster, but it's hardly necessary, he'll happily do 40 damage to himself per swing, and with weaken and insidiou up you shouldn't really be suffering.

I'm not to sure about the don't bring axe skills thing with a warrior.
When my warrior went to fight him (axe warrior), I didn't change any of my skills in my bar. I brought my axe (and axe skills) and beat him. He died. Infact I was kind of disappointed since this was my first time in and everyone was talking him up so much. I guess it is harder with different classes.

The Mirror uses an axe, so if you bring axe skills he can use them. You were luckly I guess.

Remember to not be so adamant about retaining your skills distribution setup. Adjust where your points are needed to give you the best advantage over the doppelganger as once you beat it and receive 50,000 xp you will gain enough refund points to change back to your original setup.

ALSO, you can now go back to either of the 3 desert towns and do the change secondary class quests which on changing class automatically refund ALL your points you have in your secondary classes allowing you to swap secondary abilities around on a whim without using refund points.

I've said this before. For a warrior remove all skills from your skill bar. Put Frenzy on your skill bar since it's like the first skill you learn as a warrior.

One on one this is one of the worst skills to bring to a duel. As soon as the doppleganger uses it, game over.

Why? (for the 2 of you who didn't figure it out)

Frenzy allows you to attack 33% faster which translates to 50% more damage over a given Time period. However during this period you take double damage. Start the fight and do NOT use Frenzy. When the doppleganger uses it, he will start taking twice as much damage from your hits while he only does an additional 50%.

And yes, a warrior is quite capable of beating his/her mirror without modifying anything. Just go in and hack away. You still have a reasonable chance of outright doing more random damage.

I beat my W/R at level 13 by using spirits and apply poison. All my slots bar one were spirits, he dies by the time he uses apply poison.

Thank you for this clue!

I had made about 20 attempts to no avail when I read this thread.

As a Hammer Smite War\Mo I brought:

Holy Strike
Hammer Bash
Counter Blow
Retribution
Bane Signet

I cast Retribution before I enterd the arena, and let my energy regen.

From then on I used the knock-downs paired with Holy Strike, something my Dioppleganger never learned to do. The extra damage HS does to a knocked-down foe made all the difference.

Thanks again!

Thats how i did it with my Mo/Me...i set up a bunch of spells that required hits (retribution etc) and just had to do more damage to him before he could do it to me...though life attunement probably would have helped

Also using arcane echo with symbol of wrath (the aoe smite spell) does damage pretty quickly.

You Guys are Over Thinking it. Simplicity is the best. he's a computer. AKA stupid. So Trick him.

Monk:
Take Everything off your Skill Bar except divine boon. since it only costs 5 mana, and with divine favor attributes, you get haled for each time you cast it. But Since it's an enchantment, the computer will only use it once. that translates to free heals for you while he gets nothing. Just blast him aay with your wand. using divine boon occasionally to heal.

Elementalist:
Meteor Storm. Pure and Simple. It doesnt matter if your an air ele, or a water, or earth, you can get the refunds back fast enough. jsut switch to fire and go for meteor storm, and Immolate. and if your mesmer second class, get arcane echo, or echo. Keep him down, Burn him, and you win.

Ranger:
Take a few spirits on your bar. Infact, Take All your spirits. Like i said, he's a computer, so he's stupid.. err.. IT'S stupid.. He will try to cast the spirits while you blast him away with your arrows. Once, My friend just used disrupting shots to stop his spirit casting and he jsut tried to cast it again. but he doesn't always try to recast. So you might get lucky on that part or not. But the best bet is to jsut let him as them so you have freedom to do whaever you want. be it pound him with as many arows as possible, or set traps right on his feet.

Warrior:
This one i a bit harder than the others. since it relies on random damage spikes basically. Bring whatever you think you can do more damage to him before he can do to you. My best advice for this battle, is don't bring any healing skills or spells. Computers have very high attribute points in most of the skills you would bring, so he woul just wear you down.

Necromancer:
Blood Sacrifice. Let him basically take chunks out of his hp with spells that wont do much, while you just attack him. Just take alot of skills from the blood magic portion that makes him sacrifice his health for little things that wont help in the long run. you dont even need to change your attributes to clood magic, since the sacrifice amount would be the same anyway. Or use Spells like Price of Failure to make it go faster once he starts attacking you.

Mesmer:
In one of the above posts, somebody said to throw empathy on the guy and just dodge around his arrows. That is a very good idea. It's Simple but effective and since the computer wouldn't understand not to attack while it's on him, you win.

That's that. simple but effective ways to ascend.

As R/E I found a very safe way of taking him out (albeit a little too slow to get the bonus).

I use Earth Magic for the wards, so I loaded up Ward Against Melee and ran up beside him. Obviously he switched to the axe and of course couldn't hit me very often. I didn't have any bow preps with me that time, so could have been quicker if I'd had Ignite Arrows or Poison Arrow. Other preps may also help. No Troll Unquent though.
Of course don't take Apply Poison because that will help the doppler no matter which weapon he uses.

Soon I'm going back for the bonus
