GW 2? Possible Expansion For GW1?
Hey guys,
So I just got back on on GW1 cause I just now regained access to my computer in months! I didn't buy GW2 yet and I'm still thinking of buying it because I just LOVE THIS GAME...well gw1 that is cause I haven't tried yet the sequel and I've come across more negative reviews that basically all Anet did was slap the name Guild Wars on a game that is basically not Guild Wars.
With that said, would anet possibly make a whole new expansion or/and campaign for Gw1? I know a lot of you will say possibly not, but if a lot of people are speaking out on this, it could happen.

The chances for another GW1 expansion are slim to none, I'd say. Besides, the expansions were digging them a deeper hole with this game when it came to balancing, and the engine's pretty outdated. They started a new game for a reason. :P
What we'll probably get is some free content every once and then from the Live Team, if they are still working in this game. And possibly a paragon update.
GW2 is a good game, and has a lot of potential to only get better with time. There are many teams focused on improving all areas of the game - world pve, dungeons, pvp, community, all through free, non-expansion updates. But, it is a pretty different game, so liking GW1 does not necessarily means you will like the sequel, and vice-versa.

No, but the fact that Anet did not properly follow up on GW1 opens up the opportunity for some other enterprising developer(s) to fill in the gap. I honestly hope that at least one of these aspiring indie devs is paying attention to the business potential of an underserved segment of this market and produces a spiritual sequel to GW1 for all those players who were left out in the cold by GW2.

there's a possibility, but anet isnt adding any big things to GW for a long time now... unless we'll be surprised
if GW2 goes better (and maybe GW too), it gives us a bigger chance, if it doesnt, anet may have to either shutdown the games, or find a better way to keep em up
its possible, but not in their planning for a long time now, so they're not even thinking about it in these times
as for GW2, people heard its gonna be different, yet complain cuz its different
and so alot will leave and maybe try again some other time
this can determine GW's future, so lets hope it'll go well... just dont get your hopes up for expansions
new smaller content, like woc and wik however, may come easier

expansion? no
new content: possible (yet dont hold your breath).
when they announced gw2 they basically gave up on gw1 (a shame since they could do so much, like sorrows furnace, realms of the gods etc, not to mention the last part of the war in...series.)
gw2 is a totally different game than gw1 and many people have feelings about each.(both good bad and ughly)....would be nice if they did do more for the gw1 crowd.

I hope they consider a Guild Wars sequal. Guild Wars 2 doesn't count.

It is my opinion that, if GW2 tanks (hard to say, considering the stuff I'm reading pro and con), ANet would be FOOLS not to step back to GW1 and try to gear back towards what made GW1 awesome.
At any rate, Soulfire, I would strongly recommend that you really research whether you buy the game or not. From what I've gathered, it plays more like WoW than GW1 (I don't know, never played WoW, but the lack of point-and-click KILLED it for my wife!) If you like the instancing of GW1, you're not going to like GW2. If you don't like enemies respawning after you've killed them, you're not going to like GW2. If you like being able to doubleclick to move to something, follow someone, or move into range and attack, you are not going to like GW2.
For ME, I play the game, but I'm just not excited by it like I was GW1. I find it absolutely MADDENING when I attempt to kill a dragon: you have a whole bunch of people zerging on one taget, half the people die from 1 hit from the dragon, the computer lags so badly, you get something like 1 frame per 1-2 seconds, there's all kinds of buggy events.... OH, and the loot nerf they implemented in GW1 some years back? They just implemented one a month or so back in GW2, so people farming for materials to make high-end things have to farm even longer. Of course, they played the government's doublespeak game and called it "diminishing returns".
If you can find a guild that is active in the entire map, as opposed to just farming "FotM" (Fractals of the Mist, not Flavor of the Month, although it applies!) and you can group up with people, you may enjoy it. It is very difficult to do it all alone, however. Some of the events are designed for groups (some veteran baddies are soloable, but the champion baddies are damn-near impossible!).
Any way, as I said earlier, I'd study up quite a bit before I bought the game. I spent well over $1,000 on GW1, what with 5 accounts, all chapters, and costumes, but I've only spent $60 on GW2....and that is ALL I will spend on it.
My 2 cents, anyway.....

Considering that the GW1 Dev team has been reduced to a skeleton crew, there is no chance that there will be a new expansion. Additional content, that's very highly doubtful as well.

First off all, GW2 is alive and kicking. Some gw1 players like it, and some doesn't. The mayor mistake Anet is making with gw1 atm is what most open world mmo's are making. Not merging servers cause it seems bad advertising.
In essence it is true that merging servers means defeat (you lost customers). But on the other hand there is no shame. It was to be expected. It is a totally different game then gw1 and people dislike it. basic fact is that in general the game is more succesfull then gw1 already. right now though there are too many servers with not so many people on it and those who are there are annoyed by it.
Back to GW1 and a possible expansion. Short answer is no. Do not expect an gw1 expansion. The simple reason is that, even though people who liked gw1 butr dislike gw2 are still there (or have returned), it is an outdated game. They have put all their money on gw2 and they are pulling it off there. They are keeping the gw1 servers alive untill it is not profitable anymore and maybe beyond that for sentimental reasons. But expansions would mean for them admitting failure of gw2, and even though there are people who dislike gw2, it is commercially a success.

It all depends on the server population of GW and what they read off the boards if there is enough interest. It may bring the older GW players back that aren't playing GW2.
I wouldn't mind a small update like being able to change your skill bars in the instance areas.

Well, from the hours I've been on (European hours on American servers) - yeah its dead.... and I'm comparing the population levels in LA GW1 to populations levels in LA GW2....
Also, although GW2 in open world vs. instanced areas like in GW1, it really makes no difference. You are basically playing on your own. Chat is always dead, unless there's some newb going around with a veteran player helping them out.

1: its an older game, doenst mean its outdated, as many people still buy GW (whether its cuz of GW2, or cuz they heard about it being good, or saw it and wanna try)
2: if they had put all their money in GW2, that'd be real stupid, so i doubt they did that
bnesides, i've seen some updates after GW2 got here... in GW
3: admitting failure by updating their older game?
does that mean windows vista and 7 are failures? cuz XP still is getting updated (i'm using XP)
thats 1 example, they just put alot of money into GW2 to make it work better (and still doing that), so now they have a "blackout" in using money
i think that if the playerbase is still big enough, and paying well for GW, that they may consider it
then again, it'll take a long while, as GW2 still is new, and so its bugged/glitched/imbalanced etc.
if GW is profitable enough, i'd say it'd be stupid if they let the playerbase, which is still here, die, if they can get money out of it
i'd totally buy another expansion from GW
updating an old game(GW) AND keeping updating a newer game(GW2) means they both do well, not that they admit failure for their newest game
enough companies with older and newer games, which still are updated, look at Perfect World, for example, their oldest game gets new stuff alot (PWi), both new items to buy AND new content

I would too, Ayuhmii. In a heartbeat. I definitely won't hold my breath.
The only hope, I think--and it's a slim one--is that ANet will read enough times on the GW2 forum how the original players noticed that GW2 has nothing to do with GW. Maybe they will recognize that they can still serve two different player-bases at the same time with these two *separate* games. Again, I won't hold my breath for it.

You must be playing on low pop serves during dead hours then. The game is far from dead

LA in GW2 is usually as busy as it used to be in GW1 pre-sequel launch to me, and in GW1 there was usually only 1 to 3 american servers where most of the community went to, including a lot of Europeans, while GW2 has 52 servers.

Anet was the first to admit that GW2 would be a very different game, long before the game was out and fans realized that. That being said, I hope they consider bringing back some good GW1's features to the sequel.
We would much sooner get a GW2 expansion/ monthly updates to make it closer to GW1, than a GW1 expansion.

There is still plenty of activity in presearing and it depends on what time of day you are on for LA,Kamaden and Sing Jea.
They could enable the skill window if they wanted to.

I understand that. I read everything ANet put out before GW2, but I didn't know they were talking to me when they said I wouldn't recognize the game. I thought they meant the rest of the gaming community. I also didn't know I'd be bored after a couple months there.
It's all easy in retrospect.
