Default good beginner pvp class

Finally started playing guild wars and anxious to jump into pvp.

From doing quite a bit of observing, I sense that there is a higher learning curve than other games....as far as pvp goes. Also I realize I will be going up against a lot of people who have been playing the game for a long time.

I don't want to be a liability to any teams I am on so I am looking for recommendations for a class that I can get into matches and help my team as a newb. I am an experienced pvper going back to launch of DAoC, but like I said, seems like there is a lot going on in the matches I have observed.

Right now I have a 16 paragon, an 8 rit, an 8 warrior and a 6 ele.

Thanks much.

PS I saw some other threads but they appeared to be pretty old.

I would suggest you decide what exactly you envision yourself doing in the pvp formats.

skill interupts and energy denial: mesmer or ranger
caster damage: ele, mesmer, necro
pressure: necro, ranger, ritualist, warrior, derv
melee damage: assassin, warrior, dervish
healing/heal support: monk, rit
party support: paragon, necro, rit

These are all generalizations and nearly any role can be filled by any profession.

For a first time guild wars pvp player, I would suggest plain damage, like assassin or elementalist, in order to grow accustomed to the different pvp formats. When you are comfortable with the way everything works, then experiment a little.

Note: If you are using the observe feature you are observing high end pvp like guild versus guild and heroes ascent. These are significantly more complicated than what is typically thrown upon a first time player. There are easier pvp formats you definitely should learn the ropes on before trying them. Also, the majority of the players will not allow you to be on their team until you have decent experience. If playing the high end pvp matters a lot to you, then experiment with all the classes at the beginning, pick one you like, and then master it. Then find a guild willing to take you in, and then do it.

Thanks much for the advice. Not necessarily looking to be able to play with the elite guilds or anything. Just want to be able to do random matches and not be a liablity.

Fooling around with a ranger right now. But it seems like ele or maybe Derv might be a good toon to learn the ropes with.

Also a question about observing, it says the match starte x hours ago and such and it seems like I always seem the same few teams. Some times I almost wonder if the matches are recorded or something.

Every ranked match, matches between high ranking guilds, is recorded for people to observe. People will record the monthly tournaments as they go on and commentate if that is what you are asking.

Ahh, ok I'm not crazy then. They are recorded, lol that is hilarious when you think about it.

Touch ranger is good to start.
Or you can run a starburst build which is pretty straight forward.
Mesmer is good to learn long range stuff and it forces you to learn how to prioritize targets.
Don't use warrior. Ever.
Assassin can be pretty straight forward and effective for melee if you have the right build. Most people don't. A Way of the Assassin build is nice to pretty much just pick a target and spam melee skills. Good to learn how to prioritize targets.

Necro and Warrior are pretty much just good secondary class most of the time. But there are places where they can be potentially effective once you know what you're doing.

Healers are not for noobs but honestly the only way you can learn is by actually doing it.

The most important thing about PvP is to know what to use when. Certain classes work better on different maps. My assassin dominates Kurz FA. My Mesmer dominates luxon FA. Switch it up and they both suck. You just got to learn your skills and the maps themselves.

That's about it.

Do you mean levels? Because you should never go into pvp with anything less than a level 20. You should probably create a pvp char so you have access to free max armor/weaps and any mods you've unlocked.

The problem with observation mode is that you need to know what you're looking at. Beginners aren't going to know whats going on during the matches. Any class is a good, as long as you have someone to guide you through it. Each class have different playstyles with them, and that means you're focusing on different skills, moving differently as well as playing with a different awareness.
