Keen gear. Is there a way we can go about adding more titles to it? There were a few at that other site that I wouldn't mind having here as well.
*Notes THX's Champion status* Well.. I suppose I can take a short break from what I was doing..

Give me a list of games you would like to see, hopefully I can find them =)

*Sigh* I'm never going to get anything done around here now...

You gotta have Pac-Man, for one.

Spooky
Feb 01, 2005, 04:24 PM
Ditto on Pac-Man, i'd also throw in Breakout, Defender, Frogger, Joust, and Q*Bert.

Not to be the asshole (though it isn't like it'd be out of character at this point), but wasn't the site supposed to have launched today? I would think that those things that need to be done before we can take this site public should be done before we start holding staff Q*Bert competitions.

If there's anything that I can do to get the site live more quickly, just point me at it.

I don't hate the arcade or anything, but after several weeks of today being the targeted release date, logging in to the forums looking for news about a launch and seeing a 'we have Tetris!' link didn't exactly excite me.

Peace,
-CxE

Well, we already have a thread (http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86) about it, for one. But, firstly, the 1st was never a drop dead finalized date, merely the hopeful date. Because we don't have to make sure we're not launching during the middle of a BWE this week now we feel comfortable launching later because we'd rather launch when we're ready than launch because today's the day we said we'd launch.

That said, what we really need right now is the "content" stuff. We need little blurbs for all the categories, overviews for the professions, builds, and articles and everythign else non-databasey the way we have for a while now. We have the framework it's just things need to get filled in still.

Oh, and Galaga. We need Galaga. Any 80s arcade games are just crucial to our success.

Somehow this forum sounds remarkedly like the offices of arena.net probably sound.

Gaile: Damnit Patrick, we need to be going live with this game sometime this year, why the hell are you playing Q-bert over at guildwars guru.

Patrick: I'm only 400 points away from beating spooky's record.

Gaile: But we've got our own video game to release.

Patrick: Damnit Gaile, you made me lose, I was almost there, now I've got to start over again. Besides we'll release guild wars when it's finished and not before.

Gaile: That gw guru site isn't even up yet, what's up with that.

Patrick: They also said they'll open when it's done.

If there's other titles you want to see, by all means, suggest them. We will (hopefully) be dealing with a fairly large user base, so I want to make sure that there's something for most people, though I don't want to go overboard with adding them like some forums do - it sort of waters down the competition some. And I think that's the biggest draw to having it here, aiming for the best score, or reclaiming your title from a usurper .. it has already proven itself to work well at that thus far, so I hope it'll be a means to an end to keep people around here when we launch (soon), too.

Just played "Space Invaders".

Some comments:

First off, there was too much grind. It was like I was killing the same monsters over and over again. If I wanted grind, I'd play Everquest.

Also, the graphics are uninspired. Everything appeared very flat and pixellated; almost "cartoony." If I wanted cartoony graphics, I'd play WoW.

Now, I have to give the designers credit for their PvE ladder, but there's not much replayability in their PvE environment; as far as I could tell, it was just the same four blocks at the bottom, over and over again. They need more PvE maps, with more varied objectives.

Also, the PvP game is practically nonexistent. The devs are going to have to work at this: no game survives these days without some kind of online PvP option.

It's a good try, but... there's an awful lot of work to be done before it's ready for market.

The sad part about that, is that I don't find it in the least bit implausible that people would say as much and actually mean it.

*cough* Check the arcade again, Inde. You might just have a new nemesis.

Just played "Space Invaders".

Some comments:

Best post ever.

But, I think you've overlooked a few factors. Namely, the "space invader" shots were grossly overpowered! I'm talking one-hit kill here. I routinely got blasted to smitherens just from a glancing blow. It's like there's not even any damage location modeling whatsoever. I, for one, as an avid player of that little ship, am calling for a BIG nerf to those shots, and I hope you all join me. They're simply too strong atm and are warping the gameplay experience because of it!

Aladdar
Feb 04, 2005, 07:27 AM
lol, you guys are killing me here.

Aladdar
Feb 04, 2005, 07:49 AM
and where's the replay factor in this game. I mean, I spent all this time levelling up to screen 20 and then I had to create a new character. Now since I reached ascension I shouldn't have to treadmill back through those 20 screens again just to get back there. Where's the fun in that. I should be able to create a character already at that level with all my skills and experience intact.

And what's up with this attribute allocation?

Sausaletus Rex
Feb 04, 2005, 02:47 PM
Aladdar, the real underlying issue is diversity. There's virtually no character customization available. I, for one, don't want to play the exact same character as everyone else. It's just boring. In today's environment you simply have to have options.

Aladdar
Feb 04, 2005, 03:08 PM
I agree, there's no support classes, no melee classes, and absolutely no disruption. It's all ranged damage and as I've said before ranged damage is clearly overpowered. Where's my healers who can heal my protective houses, and I am certain I was one shot killed more than once. Something must be done about this or no one will ever play this game.

Sausaletus Rex

If you want mounts, newb, go play Joust. Have fun with your horrid PvP then, of course.

(Hey, it *is* the TGH boards! Of course, were that really the case I should have said something about how only real men play Space Invaders and both Joust and Centipede are for the mentally handicapped...)

Getting back to that little thing called the actual topic is there any sort of site or list of the other games that are available to add to the arcade? Something we can point to and go, "oooo! That one, we gotta have that one!"?

I found this great new MMO PvP game on my computer. It's hellishly balanced although sometimes hard to get good competition. I do still have the problem with one shot kills but good strategy gets you around and the levelling treadmill is rather small. It's called internet checkers and it's really cool although the graphics are rather simple.

I'm also really interested in this other MMO game I've been looking at. Talk about a hellish leveling treadmill though. I'm currently at lvl 26, I should ding 27 in a few days. It's harsh though, you like have to talk to people, and get a job after an education. And death is permanent and people sometimes loot your stuff. But the graphics are ultra cool, especially some of the women in that one zone called FSU Campus. It's called Life. I'd never heard of it till the other day though.

Does anyone know why I am unable to seem my score on the Worms 3D game after finishing a round. I can submit and see how I did, but I think it a little unnecessary for me to submit that many times, and I am to busy watching for jumping worms to check my score before it ends.

Is this a browser issue(usinge Firefox), does anyone else experience this problem?

There is a link in the upper-right corner (beside "Get New posts & Help")

Sausaletus Rex
Feb 07, 2005, 07:12 PM
There's no link on the main page, no. It's a forum feature that you can only use if you're registered on the forums. There should be a link to it on the upper right hand side of any forum page right next to "Help" and "Get New Posts" and to the right of the big icon in the center of that top bar.

PLEASE find me Pole Position!!!!!! it's an indy-car racing game, and it seemed like when I was growing up there wasn't an arcade without it.... but since I moved to Florida I haven't been able to find it ANYWHERE, not even in Atari's packages of "classic" arcade games!!!

One other thing you might consider, there was an oooooooold (talking Win3.1) RPG called Castle of the Winds, it's shareware, and I have the full version somewhere around here.... I don't think it was ever that popular, so probably not the best choice, but I'm sure there would be some interest in something like a king's quest or something along those lines.

Yes, they should. It's not really Ms.Pacman as in the arcade, it's more like Pac-Man using the Ms.Pac-Man sprites. But, hey, I've got a fever and the only prescription is MORE PAC-MAN!

(Ms.) Pacman, tetris, space invaders, chopper challenge are totally out of my league, so no one needs to worry about me taking over :P (maybe snake too, I dunno, seems pretty tough)

A really great game that you guys should try out is called Tetanus on Drugs, it's a freeware game available for PC (I also believe it's a GBA game or something), that totally owns tetris. Sorry the current site is down, but I'll post the link anyways in case it comes back up:
http://www.pineight.com/tod/

"I want X game to be on the arcade", easier said than done. It's almost guarenteed it would have to be a java or flash based game (possibly only flash, dunno. Possibly only from (a) certain site(s) too), which means if it's one of those classics, it would need to be a remake, and if it doens't exist, you'll just have to suffice trying to find it online and downloading it and playing it by yourself (not on arcade). You could then post a post here, or somewhere else to reccomend others to play it, and point them to a download.

Worm all the way, baby.

I can't control the fast speed well enough to be able to consistantly get out of tight corners, but medium feels just right. About 90% of the time I die it's because I didn't press to turn fast enough, though... (As opposed to blocking myself in or something like that)

I tried taking a screenshot while I was playing without messing up... unfortunately that didn't work too well. At least It's something to look at.

Xapti
Feb 13, 2005, 07:23 PM
I don't remember all the speeds, but I think the slowest just doesn't work because the time it takes to get to the "food" just takes too long, especially when your body grows longer.
Medium is probably the best it seems, since fast doesn't seem to register movements properly, that or we are just too slow to control it.
same thing about dying in medium too. It's as if it isn't actually registering the move sometimes In My Opinion, but maybe it's just a illusion.

Been trying to get there. Worm is the way to go, but I find that "training" yourself on python two or three times before playing a worm game helps a lot.

Zrave
Feb 13, 2005, 09:57 PM
The problem I have with the worm level is that if you try to do an "U" turn, sometimes it doesn't work. For example the worm is going down and you press left then up, if you press up before the snake has moved one square left, it won't recognize the up command.

I could slow down and try to get the proper timing for it, but I'd rather try to speed myself up and master python. Still having trouble with it, missing 40% of turns by one square :(

Saben
Feb 13, 2005, 10:13 PM
Yea, U-turn sometimes doesnt work for me either on python. But im focusing on Asteroids. Nothing like commanding a little space ship and blowing up big rocks and UFO's.

I did play some Tetris, but my meager skills are no match for your herculean score.

Mario 64 Master
Feb 14, 2005, 05:30 PM
The problem when you want to make a U turn is when you think "Hey, I need to take 2 turns in quick sucession, which means I have to tap the 2 buttons close in time together," and you overcompensate.

I tried logging in and playing on a 144mhz computer in my school but worm was running slower than slug and the response to pressing the controls was about 2 space movements too slow.

Xapti
Feb 14, 2005, 05:49 PM
I think it's halarious certain flash apps can't be run right on slower machines like that.

that's another problem with things though, different computers run them at different speeds, sometimes yielding an advantage.
