Best bow type?

I have no evidence but it appears that bows fire at different speeds, have different ranges, etc.. Is the damage listed on a bow just the dmg? Does it take into account the bow's speed?
In theory, if you can afford to be a bit closer to your target, is short bow the best type of bow?

Would love to hear other people experiences with this, or if there is a parser for GW to substaniate my theories..
