View Full Version : The Woes of FoW Armour

Finally earned the ecto and shards required for the two Fissure of Woe pieces that I set out to get a while back. But since I've acquired them, a lot of things have changed for the worse.
Firstly, people assume you are rich naturally. Today I had a fellow open the trade window with my in Droknars without warning. He didn't say anything until I opened the conversation. It went like this:
"Can I help you?"
"I need gold for my armour here"
"How much?"
"Uhh, I need 6k for the 4 pieces I need"
"Okay sure"
"Thanks"
Harmless enough, but then he keeps talking. He wants me to buy him the materials as well. I offer to buy him the wyvern armour because scales are cheap but he already bought the platemail helm and insists that I buy him the remaining 4 pieces. I gave him the materials and told him he should really learn to not to exploit the kindness of others.
Same day, sitting around in camp. Guy starts looking at my armour and starts calling me fat (which I can expect naturally). A fellow guildmate was with me at the time and told the guy to shutup. At which point, a few others join in saying "gay and fat, that guild must suck" or something along those lines.
My farming routine is becoming an annoyance as well. Yes I know, why am I still farming if I have the armour but I do have a guild to worry about. I'm getting whispers from people asking for help, blind invites and just the occasional person trying to get a look.
Going to the FoW hasn't been all that dandy either. I am getting more invites which is nice, but the groups haven't been stellar. I'm the last to receive healing since everyone seems to assume that I'm invincible, and when I do die the noobish comments come.
It's nice that in other player's minds that I'm not a noobish w/mo wielding a sword and casting healing hands + mending... but if I want peace and quiet I have to make refuge in the international guilds. Anyone else out there regreting the effort they put into achieving this milestone?

The problems you are getting are the result of the main way of getting fissure armour being via massive amounts of gold rather than skill. As such all it really says is that you are rich and waste your money/time on stuff that has no tangible benefit. Mix that in with a little envy and it's no suprise that the reaction you receive is perhaps less than you expected.

I think it depends on the class you are playing as to how you are treated.
My mesmer character's fissure armor actually helps me get into decent groups wheres as before I would struggle to get into the most rushing of PuG's.
A large part of the the appeal of GW is the people side of things. Other mesmers PM me and chat and it's a great way to meet, play and get to know people. I've also met up with other guys with FoW armor(see screenshot forum) and it's increased my enjoyment no end.
Although I suspect fissure armor on a EU server mesmer is rarer than on the US/Korea ones so the novelty value is quite high.
My ongoing nightmare with my fissure armor, is that when swapping it out I accidentally salvage it :o

FoW armor is meant as a gold sink. that is the whole point of it. without it the price of everything else would be almost untouchable for most players.
gold sinks are a way of keeping the econoly under control.

People that see you with FoW armor look up to you, because they *assume* (and I do not judge the legitimacy of this assumption) that you have played for a long time and are experienced.

1.5 million or so (in materials for FOW armor). What a waste. Since you buy FOW armor for the 'oooh, ahhh' effect, I would much rather spend my time on something with the same effect; actual use. For example, for 1.5 million I could probably go buy a 15%>50 sephis axe, or nice chaos axe. Once I get those, there are shields, other swords, etc. Something with a true purpose.
15K armor is a point to me. Something that looks neat enough to warrant a purchase. But I heard that the 1.5K armor looks pretty cool for female warriors, so I might just buy that and not get 15K armor. As of now I have 992 plat and 239 ectos. Do I want FOW armor? hell no.

Racthoh,
The guy at Droknars took you for a ride. He was propably run there
and that might explain why he had no money to buy a 6k armor.
I mean by the time you reach the forge, following the story, you should
have way more than that.
Also, I'm willing to bet he had no idea what kind of armor you were wearing.
You probably looked different enough to him that he thought you were an NPC  That might explain why he said nothing when he opened the trade window with you....
I don't know guys but I find this more likely than someone random come up to me and ask me to give him money for his armor. Well...I wasn't there so I don't know.

I bought FoW armor because my gold in storage was maxed out, and I had two of my chars holding 100k. So basically. I couldn't TRADE anymore b/c I was rich and bored to death.
I only bought two pieces, and I dunno. I find most people don't really notice at all. I prefer the fow to my old saintly armor (mostly b/c of the buggy look when she is sitting down, very lame and funny) and I finally had some more room for gold. It was a win win situation :o
It's definitely not like I was going to continue to trade in crafting items like ecto, or black dye (all i will take is rubies/sapphires now) after that trader reset. Noooo wayy....
I can't wait for sorrows armor. I reaaaally hope the ele armor is nice. Otherwise I will be very sad.
(actually tho, someone called me an ugly little monk, in ugly fissure armor.. and I giggled a bit)

*sigh* I remember when it used to be like that for us monks--you know: when monks healed. It was a great sense of community to be a healer back then, because no one wanted to heal. Ohh well, back to grind some more: ill get that +5 insightful staff and 20% enchanting upgrade someday :)

In PVE Swords are actually one of the best weapons to weild. Considering the conditions it puts on monsters. I did get a comment
"Hammers > Sword Noob" and I use Hammers all the time in Pvp but when i gave it a shot in PVE it doesnt do all much than knock down. With a slow hit rate it becomes a problem. The Bleeding / Deep Wound is handy especially in FoW significantly increasing the damage of swords.
I would also like to say, Racthoh wasnt mad about that one incident, as he mentioned there were a serise of incidents with his new FoW that got him mad. So lets try not to blame anyone here. :)
I'm still interested in the Sorrow's Furnace armor, hmm is there a thread up about it?

Just purely speculation on my part, but it'll be really funny if there will be a new SF armor set out, requiring loads and loads of rubies and sapphires. Like where are people gonna get them on a regular basis? :D

Sorrow's Furnace offers two large, explorable regions: Grenth's Footprint and Sorrow's Furnace. These regions will provide exciting new high-level content to Guild Wars players, and will offer new quests, new monsters, new items, and more. For characters who have completed their ascension in Guild Wars, these areas will provide new opportunities for exploration and reward.
Haha!

What does this prove? Armour is items... and it says and more. I don't get it.
Rubies and Saphires are dropped everywhere in later Tyria. I have had them drop from things like devourers to mergoyles. I have seen them in UW and FoW. They are simply rarer than ectos and shards.

All of this is purely speculation. No one is correct in this argument because no one has proof. Therefore, cease and desist in your argument until the 7th has arrived or a Press release from ArenaNet comes out and specifically lists everything being added. No one knows for sure either way, so don't argue about an indefinite thing.

Right, I only read the OP and none of the others so I'm just gonna respond to you. I had (and wasted rofl) quite alot (won't give any numbers). That resulted in some commodities that are "quite expensive." However I gave a lot of $ away and can still mark myself poor. I often hide those things. If I feel like bragging I use the "cool stuff," if I don't I use cheap but well working replacements. So buy replacement armor. Be invisible. Between mates and a rare few that get to see u in ur armor u can still be that generous self and get that good feeling. Oh and the 6 k dude probably didn't need any armor, he just wanted to show u that all FoW users are... and that he owns because he fooled a fissure armor guy and now he's smart. I want the armor as well, I admit, and I don't give too much of a damn "he's a noobish idiot" comment-wise.

Have they even finished all of the FoW armor sets yet for every class and every sex? I would think that would play in as a major factor on whether we get a new armor area or not.

What a disgrace for mankind you are. You might consider removing your DNA from the genpool.
It is people like you that make me laugh all so often. Who said that you need that armor all for yourself and fight for it all yourself? I have like 12 ectos. 6 of which i've gotten as a gift from friends who don't want the armor and 2 of the others i've gotten because a friend wants to help me getting the armor first. I'll help him afterwards. So where is the insanely huge grind here again? It is nonsense.
Why do people allways love to say "the one who has this item is the ubernerd with no life". That is bullshit. You know, dear Genpool Disease, there are such things as friend or having fun while exploring places. Yes exploring the underworld can take up to 5-6 hours if you're going all the way but thats 5-6 hours of fun. So what? Other people are sitting 10 hours a day in front of their TV. So wtf is so wrong about having a little ACTIVE fun now and then instead of passively sitting around.
Another funny thing is, those nerdscreamers are complaining in an internet forum. Kinda... schizo

Heheh I get that and I only wear 15k ascalon gloves and boots. Dyed the rest of my armor to match it. I'm almost to the point where I can buy a fissure armor for the torso but I'll definately be keeping the knights armor I have right now for walking around in towns like lions arch as to not attract too many beggars and n00bs.

Pardon me for saying so, but its just a visual change. True the Fissure is a pain in the ass, and gathering all those ectos and shards suck, and its a real accomplishment to your credit.
But, I've never once seen someone as better or different just because they had the Fissure armor. Its just that's how they chose to spend their time in the game, getting that armor.
Someone said that people look up to players in fissure armor. And that's crap. If anyone is looking up to someone in fissure armor, all their doing is looking up to a regular player who did the same work anyone can do.
I mean absolutely no disrespect to the OP at all. Or to anyone who worked to get their armor. But by the time you get to the top level, its just a fashion statement, and that's all.
People who treat you differently because of what you wear are stupid and need to be beaten.
Sekkira
Aug 31, 2005, 11:00 AM
Unless they're looking up to you because they don't seem to be able to generate the money or whatever to get the materials and get it themselves, hence they see it as a real accomplishment.

Thing is most ppl that get FoW armor take shortcuts in getting the armor. Not that is illegal or anything but it gives a false appearance of accomplishment.
I will have more respect for someone that quests all their materials & money for thier FoW armor than I will for someone that had their materials & money given to them by guildies or what not. Thing is...you can't distinguish between those that worked HARD for the armor & those that did not.
I had someone offer me 5 free shards the other day. I turned him down, not only because accepting such a gift would make me feel guilty but also because I want to EARN my FoW armor.
