5/15: I've finally been prodded into making a series of mini-maps. This filesizes are still a biiit large, but I can increase the compression if nessecary.

5/6:Update! I've been adding things gradually, but due to a lack of time I haven't really been able to write much here. Rest assured that I am adding onto the EAs on the map. I'll try to update the credits soon, as well.

5/3:Update! Thanks to Fina The Legend for a complete map of the desert, and Jerrith for a map of all the Ring of Fire Missions. Looks like we're heading into phase two, because I think we've got all the areas. This time, we're looking to get everything explored completely. Areas that I'd like:
Kryta: Most areas above, below, and including divinity coast and watchtower coast.
South Shiverpeaks: Look at the map... most areas aren't fully explored.
Ring of Fire: Most missions.
U-Map shots only, please.

5/2: Update! Thanks to...um... all the people I added to the credits ^^;;
I've added large portions of EAs to the Shiverpeaks, and some to the Ring of Fire. I've also changed the links again, because Kunt0r's likely more stable than mine >_>

5/1: Update! I've added some stuff to south shiverpeaks, thanks to Jak O and Sizzler. I'm not sure on some of the EA names, however... so I've left them blank for the time being. Tell me if you know what they are!

4/30: Some minor updates today. Added an outpost in the northwest section of the desert, added a new EA in the south desert, fixed some areas in maguuma jungle... Thanks to Jak O, once again, for these screenshots.

4/29 Part 2: Another major update, once again courtesy of Jak O and company! This time we've got three missions in south shiverpeaks, a mission on the ring of fire islands, two new outposts, and a few new EAs -- including one in NORTH shivepeaks named... Lornar's Pass! Note this -- many of the new EAs are so incomplete that I've chosen to leave their area borders open. If you see an EA without closed borders, it's safe to assume that area has not been explored completely. The usual links should work -- remember to refresh if you don't see the update!

4/29: Update! A very very special thanks to Jak O, Narcism, Nighty and whoever else might have been involved, for sending screenshots of the entire desert area. If you don't want spoilers, don't look at the map! I've added a new town in south shiverpeaks, 4 missions, and around 7 explorable areas -- all fully labeled thanks to Jak O's running efforts. Alrighty, here it is! The Map Project Topic for release. Since this will be ongoing, updates will be edited into the first post as with Map Projects 3 through 5. For clarity and speed, I'll seperate it into sections this time.

The Introduction:
This is for those of you who've never seen the Map Project before. Essentially, the map project is a community project to compile the largest, most accurate map of Guild Wars available. This is done by taking screenshots of the in-game map. Then, using photoshop, I compile these shots into a large map of the game. This map can then be used for a variety of things... finding areas, planning out expiditions, looking for paths through particularly difficult terrain... and sometimes desktop wallpapers ;)

About Mapping: There are two types of map windows in-game. The map that appears when you press M always fills the GW screen and is used for travelling from area to area. This map shows all outposts, missions, and towns that you've been to, as well as the clouds layer -- the bane of all mappers. This layer of clouds travels over the world map and makes it much more difficult to composite shots together. Then there is the Mini-map, also known as the U-Map. This map appears when you press U and is shown within its own window in GW. There are two important differences between the U-Map and P-Maps. First, the U-map does not have the actual outposts, towns, missions, and other such icons shown -- just the terrain. Second, it has no clouds layer. This makes it an invaluable tool for clean mapping.

My plan for the map during release:

Phase 1: Get all areas on the world map.
Phase 2: Get all areas of the world map explored completely.
Phase 3: Get the world map clean and shiny.
Phase 4: Add information and other such neato stuff.

Current Phase: ???
To be totally honest, I'm not even sure anymore XD

Taking Screenshots:
Preferred resoultion when taking screenshots is 1280x1024, playing in fullscreen.
Preferred screenshot method is U-Map.

Many thanks to you for your work on the maps. I've been comparing the pre/post maps side by side they are very interesting. It is ashame that we apparently cannot explore Pockmarked Flats, Eastern Frontier, and Surmia regions in pre-searing even though they seem to exist on the pre-searing map.

Great job on the maps. For future consideration, it would be very cool if you were to take the map project in the direction of this great site for EverQuest II maps:

This place is excellent. Thottbot (http://www.thottbot.com/) for World of Warcraft also has a great map integrated into their quest database (shows Quest NPC locations, target locations, etc).

Kuntor has informed me that the map is now taking up 8gb of bandwidth a day. If you do not want the hosting to come crashing down again, PLEASE download the map to your computer rather than using the site to view it.

On the labeled map there is a problem with the Portal between Sage Lands and Majesty's Rest

The entire (red) line of travel is in Majesty's Rest. You can even see in the labeled map where the portal is.

There's a few missing travel markers.
Beacon's Perch -> Lornar's Pass
Riverside Province -> Tangle Root (dunno if there should be one there:/)
Witman's Folly -> Port Sledge
Frozen Forest -> Ice Floe
Skyward Reach -> The Scar

I believe Lornar's Pass has a path along the east side which your map doesn't show. I can't be completely sure because I haven't explored there yet, but from the looks of the north and south side it should go through.

Great map moomanibe it's greatly appreciated.

Might I suggest compressing to a jpeg format rather than using a bitmap. I just compressed one of your older maps to see the results. Original image was a 174MB bitmap, compressed version is only 3.4MB jpeg with little to no visual difference between the two.

Compressing will certainly save a load of bandwidth and make the map viewable by people on slower connections.

A quick question. Can I use this map to create a vector overlay? I find descerning the paths somewhat hard when outputing to B&W print?

I love this thread!! I've been out of my gourd trying to figure out where some of these places are.

I can host a few images, too, if'n you need help. I've got lots of bandwidth on my domain since I used to host a forum on it but have since moved it to its own domain. Even my other domain can support a lot of traffic. Just let me know!

I slapped together an EXE that displays the map and allows users to jump quickly to areas. Nothing special and still needs work, but hopefully some of you find it useful.

There are no trojans in the program. The program has zero network code in it and anyone running a firewall will notice it never goes out. I will even publish the source if so desired. It uses a commercial image control so I can't fully open source it, but I can give out the guts of the code.

If you got a trojan, it came from somewhere else or was misidentified. I would also be curios as to what trojan your system detected.

I have a good reputation for writing freeware open source projects including AC Tool, DnD Tool, Draft Day and several other older game editors and sniffers.

I am going to download every one of these. Some of the best mapwork that I have seen in any gameworld. MOOMANiBE, "You Da Man!"

These maps are just an invaluable asset to knowing where you are when you are on the missions and quests. I always love to have the big picture. And these together, show a tremendously BIG picture.

Thank you all (contributors); from one who will use these maps on a daily basis. :D

I know there are lots of maps out there. I even saw one interactive one.

But I have yet to see a map that not only contained locations of areas but descriptions of all the NPCs in each area, and anything special about them (eg. what quests they give, what skills they train, etc). It could even include the walkable paths from one area to the next when such walks are possible.

Since the information is out there, it seems like somebody could do this with an interactive map without much difficulty if they had all the information they needed at hand.

And even with a non interactive map one could use numbers for referencing.

That is at least partially the plan for GW Arcane. It already has where to find skills on the map and collectors will hopefully go in this weekend.

May I use these maps on my gw site? The site isn't in effect yet but it will focus on exploration. Of course I will credit you in the style you wish and provide links to your page/here/where you like.

Well, I have a very small attempt at the underworld sitting on my computer waiting for me to find a group that can fill in the rest of it, but that's rather lower priority compared to the other thing I'm working on. Not to mention, it's harder to do x_x

MooManiBE, is it OK to mirror them on our guild sites, unmodified? we had done something similar to your new region maps a while ago to your big one cause some people couldn't open it except in IE, so We would like to update those with your build, linking back to you of course on source strings, which we also did when we cut it up into regions... but I think it will help relieve some bandwidth if we can mirror links on occasion... With provision that we give you credit where due...

some of us were inspired and have been trying to map out the underworld areas... but its been proving more difficult then expected. lol

I found that Nogame from GameAmp already did the catacombs too , for Pre-searing here: http://guildwars.gameamp.com/game_map/game_map/118.php

and the Prima Strategy guide has some maps of arena areas...
and has colector locations on their maps. that may be useful...

Got it, but when it DOES become a priority, its not THAT.... ok its that hard, but I know a few folks that could help you make it easier. I think we got to one of the corners of it. We were lost at the time, but making headway in the direction we were going... whatever direction that was :o There were like fields of ranger wurms and ghostly riders and this really big thing that resembled the the great pit of carkoon from star wars if anybody knows where we were :confused:

It's probably next on my list. I was packing and unpacking stuff all weekend though, thanks to getting new carpeting, so I haven't been able to access my computer. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to a good pace working on the map ^^;

On that Big Map at the bottom, there's 2 portals showing at the position of beetletun, but the town portal point of beetletun is not displayed on the map, but the small map on the top (kryta) has it. Suggest ya make a small change on that.

Hey I'm a fan of this map project, anyways I thought I would contribute too if this would be useful at all. It is a 100% (or at least I hope it is) explored lornars pass/dreadnoughts drift/snake dance run. It has quite a bit yours seems to be missing, especially in the northeast corner where your map boundary marker actually cuts off a small alternate passage through the Lornar section. I did this all with henchman last night so you can imagine the frustration -_-' But I thought I would submit em. If I have the format wrong or the pictures are taken to crappily just tell me and I will retake them. If you put my name with the contributors, just use Rumina Kiran, its my guild wars name. Anyways goodluck with this project and here are the pics!

Well... you did take them wrong actually x_x

They need to be taken in the mini-map that appears when you press U, not the fullscreen map that appears when you press M. The difference is that the U-map doesn't have that pesky cloud layer and therefore keeps the map cleaner.
(By the way, sorry about yesterday. I'm uploading the fix for the maps now. I've also tried increasing the quality again, so the full maps are larger filesize but purtier)

Doh! I tried to add it to the map last night and discovered that it's apparently the wrong resolution as well ;_;

Try 1280x1024 fullscreen, that's what I use to take shots.

I have been working on a UW map for some time, a lot of area is mapped, but the map isn't cleaned up at all ,lots of rough edges, lines, dots, etc. I will try and get it posted when its ready.

Nice Job!Kind of made me wish though that I told Xennon some of the stuff thats missing from his maps

for example in Snakes Dance there is A Griffron Spawn right near the Camp Rankor Entrance thats missing. They made some changes to the Perdition rock and Frozen Forest boss spwans last patch so there hopefully will be some more updates to the map. thougth right now this will get a lot of people to stop askign dumb questions about elites.

Btw any chance of getting the old version of the map Minus elites for quick Navigation?

MOOMANiBE: I'm wondering if it would be possible to to show paths from gate to gate in each area unobtrusively on the map. I find the way Guild Wars made their maps to be kind of confusing at times, so I think a faded yellow line or somesuch would be really helpfull for those of us using the maps to get from region to region.

I got the map nearly 100% completed, only missing Dragon's Gullet on ONE character.
I have even filled some holes on your map.
So if you wouldn't mind I will take a crapload of screens for you once I explore Dragon's Gullet, so you can make your map ULTIMATE!

I found 2 more boss spawns in Mineral Springs that weren't on your elite map. I also got pics to show where.

I have recently fully mapped every inch of the world includeing missions. All but the very hardest bonus's have even been completed as they healped with completing the map.

I being frustrated with foggy areas on the map took the time of about 6 days with henchies to fully unfog everythign you could get to...even if it meant re-entering a mission 15 times to sprint to more fogged part of it.

It is current as everything is from this week. Collector locations and what not is not different and has not changed. Searched the net, so far even the map listed here has many foggy spots...which this is the most explored, but not current even with explored parts.

At current the map I did is only being viewed by the guild.

Has anyone been doing the Underworld or Fissure of Woe areas? I have been having a heck of a time tying to myself. using the compass capture method (like the one they did for Catacombs) But of course its much more vast and not as easy cause of the lack of good landmark features to help line up the sections, and quite frankly its getting harder to get groups together that want to go there just for mapping... I'm starting to think it would be a better Idea just to hand sketch it or something to just get general layouts of the areas...

Got to every inch you can get to now. Some areas have changed since the area was posted so parts of the map project is not current.

"The Falls" The south east corner now has a shrine to Balthazar...instead of a plain path.

The mission "Aura Glade" in the gathering area of the mission right above the sheild for map travel has a huge tree.

The mission "Dunes of Dispair" has a long extra amount of land to the south east.

There is another team arena spot that is in the "Fire Island" area.

The mission "Bloodstone Fen" you can run past Habilon at the end to a path that the npc walk down when you first start the mission.

----Thats just some areas either changed, not even on the map linked, or there is just plain more to the area.

I'm gonna make notes of major sightings in some areas..namely where mobs are (preforeably the huge packs that are just sucide to fight). As well as wurm locations..useful info when running through somewhere (or just trying to avoid a wurm all together). I got nearly 35 images saved to file of sceen shots of the map I have.

You know, if people are really causing you to run out of bandwidth so fast you should put the maps in zip files so they're forced to download them.
People can still make a shortcut to the file after they've downloaded and unzipped the map if the ease of use is such a big issue for them.

Actually, that's not the case this time -- the site hosting the map is, quite simply, going bye-bye. ^^;
If I'm worried about bandwidth, chances are I'll increase the compression before I start putting them in zips though.

Must be the online version cause its not in the Printed Published version. but they said it would be a free update to the printed version on their message board. that would include reprinted corrections and omitted maps and tables.

Since Mooman's having quite a bit of trouble getting new hosting (not to mention schoolwork getting in the way), I'm going to provide temporary hosting for the maps on my own server for a while.

i havent seen any guild hall maps but it wouldnt be too hard.... you can take screenshots of the mini map in observer mode for that (i actually did that for a few a while back if i can find them)

As much as I want to start the GW Map Project again, but knowing I will turn it over again to someone coz I don't have time to dedicate to arranging the maps (even though now I have photoshop to use), might as well pass what I have currently to whoever will be interested.

My screenshot details:
* 2 versions: 1 clean, 1 with towns.
* I embraced the edges of the map and move my view 360 degrees to get every unfogging possible in every direction, thus you are guaranteed to have the complete unfogged version of each map (note: some maps not yet finish)
* Maps taken with the highest resolution and video setting possible (video card and game video settings).
* Monastery Island screenshots taken using a Prophecies character thus lacks some towns (still going to explore one last area accessible to Prophecies cahracters).

First Screenshot batch dated: April 27, 2006 Thursday. 2230H GMT/UTC+0800.

Hello guys

After readin this thread for the longest time and hearing that Laibeus Lord is stepping down I have taken actions to prevent this project from dying (though it never will).

All along I have noticed several flaws with the maps creation
1) The lines, I hate them, they make the map seem copy and pasted.
2) Editing: No easy way to edit these projects

I have taken measures to fix these problems, using Laibeus' images I have compiled something in Photoshop that I think is quite impressive.

On the above map I have done the following things to remove lines, and add a degree of editability

- Started out with blank maps. No labels were visible on the map. This way, only one map needs to be made, one layer switched on and off for labelling
- Instead of using existing labels I rendered the symbols and duplicated the text as best I could, using layer styles to match the text and symbol effects. Again this allows for all symbols and such to be turned off relatively easily.
- To remove lines I used a feather selection tool, I softened each of the edges to removes the sharpness and thus removing the edge of each image.


I think this map turned out quite well, and to be honest would be more than happy about continuing on with the remainder of the map; however, I am unable to capture the screenshots. So if someone could do that for me we would be golden :)

On top of each of the blank screenies I would need a screenshot of each of the symbols.

The other ones were ugly and lacking in quality.

There needed to be some form of organization on the map. The way I have done it allows me to turn the symbols off in one click titles off in one click and many other things. Not only that but I can move each symbol and town around individually using the psd as well as different parts of the map.

Its much more customizable and easy to add on to.

I do need the center area however and a couple other areas to make it 100% but those should not be that hard to get ahold of.

For those fo you that are working onthe other ones, If i could be so kind to ask you to send me those areas without the towns on them that would be great,

BTW you may want to link and thumbnail the image above as it makes the forums all screwy even on my Huge ass 1800x1440 display... Feel free to use my mini for a thumb if you want. but its rather easy to make one yourself.

Word of advice... accepting images from other sources can be bad sometimes. I found that depending on the resolution of some other sources it will not match up properly in some cases... the U images are good for some areas, Most really, But other areas even the best detail is useless really because of the multi levels.
The Lines that are left on the map are down in unused areas of the map, so I never worried about it... Evidentally you have a real issue with it. so by all means if you want to make a better map. Go for it...

Finally. IDK why people always hate the area titles... but OK. I just find them extremely useful... I guess I'm just a dead duck... Or in my case a Fried Frog if you will. lol
Incidentally here is Zen Dajun, Cho's Estate, and Arena... And the training area blow ups with U maps details... These were missing from both your original post and you last post.

Going to release v1.10 sometime this month. Waiting for the other patches. There were I think at least 2 zones that was changed, though the changes are unnoticeable, I noticed the changes while playing my Rt/Mo, compared it to my old shots from my Ascalonian R/Rt.

v1.01 been out weeks, I just lost this thread. Just an update, I ended up doing my own compilation while 2 other guys were doing their own compilation. Make that 3 - add Sniperz53 ;) Just have nothing to do during headstart since I finished the SL (storyline) less than 52 hours since headstart :p so there, I released my own version, as well as shared what I have. Thus we ended up with 4 or maybe even 5 Cantha map versions :p

Anyway, use the version I have for your needs. Host it to your sites, chop it, even remove the credits if you want, I don't really care ;)

Well my map of cantha is 92.5% complete and to be hounoust is very hard to find the missing 7.5%.I may consider making a map if i have the time.

I just noticed a huge LINE on the map lol

I will be fixing that and releasing 1.55 later on tonight, I will also be examining each of the maps above and see what we are missing.

On top of that expect a map also to come soon with the area titles as well :)

However after reviewing it it seems I pasted another image over much of the bottom part of the map, I will get to fixing it asap though!

I uploaded the updated version btw. With the unnoticeable changes in. I think that's pretty much everything in Cantha.

There's 3 more zones that was recently updated, going to watch a movie tonight so I'll take care of the 3 updated zones later ;)
