View Full Version : How bored do you get in PvE?

I love my ranger, she's great, but I find myself auto-attacking so much of the time, it just puts me to sleep. None of the good or fun marksmanship skills have decent cooldowns, and the only time I find myself mashing buttons or begging for more time is if I'm Barraging, which is pretty brain-dead aswell.
Well, it could be worse. I could be a water or earth magic elementalist. Yikes. Talk about long and horrible cooldowns. Wand much?
I don't know if it's just me, but man, do I really wish for a huge ranger skill update next patch. Remove 1/2 second cast attacks for spikes, and lower the cooldowns so I have something to do! Make the class as engaging as Dervishes or Assassins can be in combat!

I play my ranger alot, and you can run any weapon with alot of diferent builds effectively.
As for bow skills, prepared shot+3-5 atk skills with <=5 sec recharge and u'll be spamming alot.or point-blank+zojun's shot constantly.

I run BHA, Spear builds, Axe builds, scythe builds, Barrage, [Penetrating attack][sundering attack][prepared shot] Turret, AP Caller (D-way), Mega Buff ranger ( [asuran scan][conjure flame][glass arrows][triple shot][dual shot] etc)
I generally change my build depending on the area, or what i feel like playing.

Ranger is the most versatile class in the game.
Try these:
Escape Scythe
Bunny Thumper
Packhunter
Interupter
Trapper
Lyssa Sin
Toucher
You'll find yourself spending alot of time in the game trying to acquiring weapons, armor, runes, and weapon mods for your new builds, but it's a fun journey.
Basically, if you are bored with a Ranger, you're screwed. No other class will give you the option of playing so many different types of powerful, perfectly viable builds in pve or pvp.

Currently, on my PvP bar, I have four skills that have added effects based on when and how they hit my target, if you can consider an interrupt to be an added effect. I can't get bored about that, I always have to watch and evaluate my targets.
Similarly, in PvE, I had three such skills, including my two interrupts, as well as BHA and Pain Inverter, so I would have to evaluate before attacking a mob who I would want to be targeting with those skills to get the most out of them.
If you're playing turret spam or Barrage, I can see where you'd get bored.

I've had alot of fun acquiring Greens for my ranger (I'm a green hound!). Bolten's Recurve, Rotwing Recurve and Saushali's Recurve's are all mine! I own 2 Drago's, 4 Vampiric Drago's...and 10 other greens customized for my ranger. I'd really like to see shortbows buffed to spear-like DPS, so I could use Ashlyn's and Tundoss'.
And then I own green 3 Scythes (Fahralon's, Droknar's and Mallyx's Savagery), and 3 Hammers (Nephilim, Baglorag's and Murakai's). I didn't really like melee much. Don't know what it is, but in most RPGs I just prefer to have a view of the fight from a distance, be it World of Warcraft, Baldur's Gate or Elder Scrolls.
Maybe I'm just fighting with the idea that I'm getting tired of the game itself. Who knows! I hope that's not the case and a new build or skills changes can fix everything. I've had great times with my ranger, it can't end just yet.

In PvE I typically have Axe in hand on my Ranger when H/Hing.
Also If your bored on your Ranger try making solo builds, it's alot of fun.
I can barrel Keg spam just like a perma sin can. I can farm Raptors. I really like soloing Napuhi Quarter.
I work on trying to come up with oither things when Im bored of vanquidhing.

orange, if you could please elaborate on the perma-sin like keg spammer ranger build and the solo naphui (HM btw?), that would be just awesome! I rolled a sin just so I could do the keg farming, but meh - I'm so sick of trying to roll new char's just for a specific farm...
on topic though - I was thoroughly bored with my ranger main, until I started getting into title-grinding. It sounds counter-intuitive (grind=boring), but really if you set little mini-goals for yourself, like vanq'ing one area per day, or 3 faction vanq's or 5 rounds of AB, 10 elite skills per day, etc...plus, the game has 4 chapters with different monsters/areas to look at and explore, so when I was vanq'ing I would mix it up a bit (and do carto at the same time). Then, when you have those 26 PvE titles, just find different farms for the money-sink titles (sweets/alc/party/wisdom/zaishen)!

After playing this, you'll think anything else is exhilarating.

Kegs are Easy, IF you get a runner you only need 4 skills, plus some optional ones if you wish. Heres the build for Hard Mode.
Glyph of Elemental Power
Armor of Earth
Stoneflesh Aura
Melandrus Resilliance
Earth 12
WS 12 + runes
Exp the rest.
Optional skills
Elemental Lord
Ebon Escape <--- highly recomended
Windbourn speed <-- If used change att spread slightly
Troll Unguent
You will take mostly "0"s as damage and a handful of "5"s they will give you 4 hexes and deepwound to feed Mel Resilliance so despite their -8 pips of degen you will be at max regen with pips in reserve as well as +7pips of energy regen.
Use a +20% enchant weapon for StoneFlesh.
I also use the insignias that are VS Earth Damage, but I'm not 100% sure they are needed.
So you know, gather em up, pull them to The Keg guy and spamm away.

The LAST post is the build I currently use in Naphui, it's only NM, I take too much Damage in HM and since the NM one works so well I have yet to be bothered to make a HM one that works.

YE, Feathers will make you Rich, My FoW Armor was bought basically with Feathers as were my HoM Destroyer weapons back when Onyx and Diamonds were not cheap at all.
@.Loki
There will be runners this weekend. I feel as though a build can be made for a Ranger to do both the Run AND the farm solo, just haven't had time to figure out the Runner part yet.

Orange, tried that R/W jaya bluff feather farmer, all I can say is thank you, thank you! 1 hour = 272 feathers + lots of iron + 7k off of runes/insignias (lots of blue/purple armor - got a major vigor, attunements, minor death magic, survivors)...plus, as an added benifit - it's actually fun! The 600/smite naphui farmer is so boring imo, and this way I can actually farm with my ranger :) Btw: I did make one change, however...I took out [sever artery] and replaced it with [ebon vanguard assassin support] and I make sure to target the darkfeathers first, that way the sin takes them out...whirlwind attack= lots of pretty yellow numbers

The R/W is for Naphui Quarter Solo in NM, but you used it in Jaya Bluffs? Never tried it there. Perhaps I shall.
I use a R/E for Jaya BLuffs, 16 mobs 100ish foes 12 minutes.
PM me IG for the build
Try The R/W in Naphui Quarter too

O_O not reading ftl rofl
I did try in Naphui, I was getting worked by anything >2 foes - so I must have been doing something wrong. Took me forever to get all of the right equipment per your specs (wtb -2/stance inscription lol) I hate having to buy stuff that I know I merch on a daily!
Anyway, when I was failing in Naphui, that's when I went over to Jaya, and it worked well there. I didn't realize there was a different build for Jaya, lol
Thanks, anyway.

ill try to fix my build and try different routes
if i cant think of anything then ill use runners as my last resort
EDIT:
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/7537/gw213.jpg
works, ended up paying for a runner for 3k ( runner said he's running 6k on the weekend )
can't aggro everything so i only take a couple then keg em
stoneflesh aura helps against accumulated pain ( im using Earthbound )
might also switch IAU for Mental Block

@ gw_poster
A few Things for R/W Stance in Naphui.
Be sure you are attack the Rits first or they will heal everyone.
Do it in NM, HM they deal too much damage, I think the idea is sound for HM but it needs tweaked.
Spread the Degen, "TAB" to foes when [Sever Artery] is charged and get everyone Bleeding/Poisoned.
If your Dwarf rank is NOT 10, consider lowering your sword and adding to Expertise, that or drop Hundered Blades for [Dryders Defenses] so you can maintain a 75% block stance 100% of the time. Hundred Blades speeds up the run so much though.
The Rangers deal the most Damage, If you can pull them slightly so they ball, you can then run in and Whirling Defense/Hundred Blades them to death real fast without even using the degen skills.
@ Loki
Another fan of playing Ranger was making the run buy using Kinetic Armor and Burning Speed. I dont know how it is for energy though because you have to cast burning speed every 5 secs or so to maintain Kinetic. He also, at my suggestion, took two sets of armor Survivors/Vite for the run and the earthbound for the farm.
I can do it like the Permas do, Aggroing one side then the other, but its difficult with the Armor of earth slowing you down and the haveing to recast StoneFlesh often. I typically take them out in 5-6 groups but still that takes very little time of of the clock to do.
