Well I'm trying to get a good build goin on my ranger and its getting frustrating. So far my build is:
[distracting shot][sloth hunter's shot][broad head arrow][lightning reflexes][troll unguent][empty][antidote signet][resurrection signet]
I kind of want a good damaging ranger, but i have monk secondary which I think was a mistake. However any help to improve this and make a good damage outputer would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. I have eotn prophecies and factions.

Rangers won't top the damage charts, if that's what you're after. Currently the build with the most pretty numbers is
[incendiary arrows][ignite arrows][ebon battle standard of honor]
...I think. :D

There are a lot more experience rangers than I, but it's my favorite character so I've been reading and studying and listening to experienced players and taking into account my own playing style, so YMMV.
I'm not a big fan of the r/mo combo myself. A lot of people like it. I do have it as a secondary, but for PvP only in Alliance Battles and Random Arenas since a lot of times you're on your own for healing.
In PvE I usually go r/me or r/rt depending on the area I'm heading out into. A lot of people pew-pew the [splinter weapon][barrage] combo, but in some areas where you have a lot of mobs I see a ton of numbers flying. Another favorite combo of mine is [apply poison][burning arrow][epidemic] but of course this combo only works on fleshy foes. For non-fleshy you drop AP. In all PvE cases I usually bring [ebon vanguard assassin support]. I always like to have [savage shot] and [distracting shot] for shutting down monks and casters.
A ranger will never be a super high damage character. It's a really fun class though so don't give up and play around.
P.S. I browse builds on PvX wiki for ideas but it's best to create builds that suit your own playing style. A great build is only great if it works for you.
Oh, and good luck! :)

if you have eotn access then pve-only skills are your friend..take advantage of them. the bar i used to acquire 22 titles so far, including vanqing all 4 games (using sabway heros and hench for 99% of it) was:
[pain inverter][ebon vanguard assassin support] OR [ebon vanguard sniper support] <--for multiple healer groups [Broad Head Arrow][Savage Shot][Distracting Shot][Needling Shot][Finish Him!][Lightning Reflexes] or [Flesh of My Flesh] EDIT: instead of [Needling Shot]
just tab-space high-priority targets ([pain inverter] for the aoe or other high damager, [ebon vanguard assassin support] on the other high damager or healer, [Broad Head Arrow] on the healer/protector, then [Savage Shot] and/or [Distracting Shot] on w/e needs it...tab back to who you put [Pain Inverter] and/or [Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support] on and if not yet dead, then hit with [Finish Him!]
I remember only having to modify my hero setup a couple of times such as fire imp areas in talmark wilderness (brought dunkoro with extinguish), and one or two other areas, otherwise this worked for me (and still does)...this was just for vanquishing and almost all missions....I will switch up my team/henchies for most dungeons and a few certain missions (undead mostly)
EDIT NO. 2: for weapons, I use a zealous flatbow 15^50, +30, but for some areas I have specialized-grip bows equipped - recurve bows of charrslaying (+20% vs. charr), deathbane (20% vs. undead)...always customize your weapons for the inherent +20%, including your heros weapons....(unless it's something you think you might want to resell) for armor I use all radiant/attunements with a mask for each attribute in storage (+1, +2's, except for highly customized builds, a +3 - for instance, uw touch ranger)

I use:
Hunter (Sloth seems fine), Point Blank, Zo Jun's Shot (Factions Point Blank), Barrage, Savage Shot (or Distracting Shot), Troll Unguent, Antidote Signet, and Sunspear Rebirth Signet (seems like you'll have to use Ressurect).
R8 Sunspear, 11 Wilderness Survival, 12 Expertise, 13 Marksmanship
Ironwing Flatbow (http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ironwing_Flatbow_(unique_item)) from Endgame Factions (not elite mish), and Razortongue's Recurve Bow (http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Razortongue%27s_Recurve_Bow)

If your going for damaga BHA definetly isnt that best choice. [burning arrow] for single target and [incendiary arrows]or[barrage] for AoE

Monk secondary will only limit your choices until you ascend in whatever game you started your ranger in.
Then you can change secondary and try out other builds.
Elemental secondary can boost damage a fair bit using conjure element combined with an appropriate elemental bowstring.
With no points in the element you do +5 damage for 60 seconds this rises to +26 but you are very unlikely to take it that high but you will probably have enough spare points to take it to +10 to 15 extra damage.
Bow damage + Ranger attack damage + Conjure element and even favourable winds you can hit over 200 on low armoured opponents.
Add the ebon battle standard of honour to that and your doing pretty good for a ranger.
Esp as your likely to have them bleeding crippled poisoned and dazed as well.
Assassin and Ritualist are possibles too with the ritualist weapon skills like splinter shot and the assassin skills to boost criticals though Assassin Ranger is more common than Ranger Assassin.
You are not the highest damaging class but you can be almost immune to elemental damage and spread conditions very well your also one of the best at interrupting enemy spellcasters.

GW being party oriented, spewing out high damage is not really all that necessary. Run into a few monk or ritualist bosses I can think of, not to mention dungeons, and stun with interrupt will shorten battles far quicker than any class's raw damage.
I am R/Mo quite often, but only for Rebirth.

just another thought....if your wish is to damage quickly and kill efficiently, especially in HM, if you tend to H/H a lot like I do, then I suggest trying the R/A AP build. It's a tad gimmicky, but works wonders with a sabway and/or discord team - all you need is the following:
[Assassins Promise][You Move Like A Dwarf!][Ebon Vanguard Assassin Support][Finish Him!] and fill in the rest...I use [Poison Tip Signet][Savage Shot][Distracting Shot][Sloth Hunter's Shot]
Just be sure to call your target so your H/H know who to hit..you want that target to die first (and quickly) so AP recharges your bar and gives you >20 energy instantly...I roll with my pinky on ctrl and just tab-space amongst foes. You are not really playing ranger per se by doing this as I rarely get a chance to actually use bow skills before the foe(s) is/are dead, unless AP for some reason doesn't recharge, and it does make PvE rather 123 boring...but meh, it gets the job done quickly and efficiently
