Well, I just got a friend of mine to start playing Guild Wars. He only has the first game. He made a ranger, and I've been trying to help him on his build. I know he needs help because he was using skills such as Heal Party. Can anyone help him with a build? He has two max Green Bows that I got him, and a couple of good skills like Apply Poision and Distraction Shot. Does anyone else have ideas for some skills that he can use for his Ranger that are only in Prophises?
Oh, and he really wants to use his pet. :p

Off the top of my head, assuming a non-Elite for now approach
[apply poison][distracting shot][trolls unguent][throw dirt][savage shot][dodge]
alternative
[ignite arrows][dual shot] rather than apply poison, if you check the build that the charr archers use in EoTN its based on using ignite arrows to increase damage done.
I found it hard, early on to concentrate on just 2 attribute lines for ranger, typically for early proph its a Expertise/Marksmanship/Wilderness Survival, just remind him that expertise will drop the cost of the skills and to look for break points (no point having extra attribute points in Expertise if you only have 10e skills and the next point you spend reduces the cost for 15e).
You could also take a pet but thats another attrib split that you dont want!

Barrage + Prepartions = wasted skill slot. If you really want some poison with Barrage go with [Poison Tip Signet]. Personally, I hate Barrage and much prefer [Broad Head Arrow]. but if your friend is new, he might enjoy mashing one button and doing alot of damage, so yeah, go with Barrage.
Might also want to take a look at pvxwiki (http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page) for some ideas. Not the greatest, but it's more then enough for any new player.

If he only has Prophecies then there's not a whole lot of variety. [Barrage] is pretty much the only decent elite.
something like
[Barrage][Savage Shot][Distracting Shot][Antidote Signet][Troll Unguent][Throw Dirt][Lightning Reflexes][Resurrection Signet]
for interrupting you'd be stuck with something like
[Marksman's Wager][Distracting Shot][Concussion Shot][Savage Shot][Penetrating Attack][Lightning Reflexes][Antidote Signet][Resurrection Signet]
or cripshot (not really that useful in PvE)
[Apply Poison][Crippling Shot][Savage Shot][Distracting Shot][Antidote Signet][Troll Unguent][Lightning Reflexes][Resurrection Signet]

some elite or other and: [distracting shot][savage shot][apply poison][antidote signet][troll unguent][lightning reflexes][resurrection signet] is one that would work, off the top of my head.
Elite could be [cripshot], [oath shot], [melandru's resilience] (kind of, not great for general PvE), or a lot of other things.

There are better elites than Barrage like Punishing Shot,Oath Shot.Crippling Shot,Melandrus Arrows,Poison Arrow anda few others. What I don't like about Barrage is that it does very little damage and removes your preparations. It is only good using a long or short bow.
I am talking Prophecies here.

The best way to help your friend is to not help him.
Let him play the game, learn how it works, let him make mistakes. Once he has sorted something reasonable out for himself, then help him improve to the next level. By jumping in and giving him everything early, you are taking much of the game away from him.
