I'm new to the ranger section and I spent sometime coming up with a set of skills I think will do well. Mainly for PvE. I just would like to post it here so other, more experienced, rangers could praise it, modify it, or slap me for it.

R/Me

Arcing Shot
Power Shot
Hunter's Shot
Power Drain
Throw Dirt
Dodge
Troll Ungent
Marksman's Wager (E)

The idea here is that I have the first three to attack as I please. Power Drain and Marksman's Wager for when I get low on energy. And Throw dirt and dodge for when they get too close.

Thanks for any feedback.

First, I'll tell you what you are not doing. You are not using a bad build, but you are not using a solid enough build either. Marksman's Wager isn't the best elite you could be using. The question now is what skills do you have access to? Which campaigns? Arcing shot is entirely too slow without using Read The Wind on your bar.

Screaming Shot is superior to hunter's, imo, and should be changed if you can.

As for interuptions, this is the pride of most ranger players, so using a mesmer interupt is a dicey subject. The mesmer interupt is effective yet isn't energy efficient since expertise doesn't effect spells generally. Also, Savage Shot is regularly used and will be more effective due to the fact that you can use it 4 to 5 times in comparison to the 1 time you would use Power Drain.

Dodge isn't needed in PvE, and in PvP, Natural Stride is more desired and for good reason. However, you don't normally need to run in PvE.

As for power shot, I just prefer Keen Arrow and Sloth Hunter Shot. If you have Arcing, you can get Keen. Throw dirt and Troll are the only things I would keep at this point.

As for energy management, Expertise of 12 is fine for skills with 10e-15e usage. If you have NF and need an energy management skill that does serious damage to boot, I'd recommend Prepared Shot.

With Prep Shot, you can use any preperation and still get the damage output and benefits of the prep used. Take this into account when you can get the skill, but if you can't get the skill for whatever reason, then let us know what you have access to.

I'll try to add a few things to what alchemist said:
- As u've alrdy specced a bit into WS, you should try [Skill: Apply Poison]
- I would go for [Skill: Broad Head Arrow] or [Skill: Burning Arrow] as your elite
- Then try to put [Skill: Epidemic] in there and you've got AoE condition spread
- Also consider [Skill: Glass Arrows] as this is one of the best elites for going archer all the way

hope i helped ;)

Thanks a ton for the advice. I was really not expecting all that much but it was very helpful from both of you. I have all three campaign and even GW:EN but going through with mostly warriors for my selection. I guess I was really underestimating Expertise. Which I really feel dumb for, but explains a lot of low cost. Thanks

Yep, if your going to be using power drain Then you should have plenty of e-management and their is no need for MWager.

I suggest you take Read the wind in its place and drop power shot for an elite bow attack ( either burning arrow or punishing shot would be a good bet.. ) Also, consider bringing a res. Rangers have a high tendancy to be the last one left alive in a group. A ranger without res is asking for a wipe.

Prepared shot is a nice alternative to the standard burning/broad head arrow. Marksman's wager is nice with keen arrow/screaming shot/penetrating shot/savage shot, but not as powerful as some mentioned before.

If you have EotN Prepared Shot is right outside the Eye.
