I was browsing through the new games out and after seeing an advert for GW:EN i was wondering how the old GW world was getting on.
I played GW solidly for a Year before exams and other commitments got in the way.
so let me just reminisce a little,
Who remembers the very first 55 monk builds? where just about any monk could make riches with only 1k startup costs? those were the days,
And when in halls you couldn't tell the difference between a rank 3,4, and 5, and a rank 6,7 and 8 etc. Or before that when you could always get into a group because nobody was any higher than rank 3!
If anyone has anything they missed from way back then post it here so we can all remember the good old days.

Probably one of my favorite memories was when I pressed M in Post-Searing and said "Look at the size of this place! I can't wait to explore it all!" When I was done with the game, I was bummed when I realized that only about a little more than half of all the map was used.
And I can't ever forget getting that full set of Droknar's Platemail. Oh how I love the pigmail!

Another thing i remember doing was looking at the presearing map and running through the world thinking how big that was and presuming that was the whole game world.
Also how epic i felt doing the initial little PvP fight at the end of presearing, and how annoyed i was when we lost.

i remember after everything got all burnt up and I entered the real Tyria I looked at the map and saw the fire islands and was determined I would explore my way there. Little did I know that you had to follow a story line and all that jazz and couldnt just run straight to a dock from Ascalon :)

I remember ecto dropping in piles of 4 and people selling them for 125-200 gold. I also remember rank sticks, colored pets, skill gems, skill rings, 1k black dye, 100k Sup Vigor/Absorption... so on and so forth.

I remember when I first got to post searing on my little level 7 warrior. I saw a group looking for a warrior for Last Day Dawns. I clamped down on the Shift key and said "I'LL GO, I'LL GO!" Their response to me wasn't nice at all.

I remember when I could come onto the Guild Wars forums and not see several new topics complaining about everything you can think of.
There are issues that are acceptable to be complained about, but every aspect of the game is criticized in one way or another these days.

I remember when everyone were playing nice and just enjoyed the game. Not a lot of spam, scam, screaming kid, pug was fun to be in. And not a lot of cry for nerf this/that, put this/that in, why is this so hard/easy?, why can't i get in HA team? A good old days when you just log in and y'know......... just play.

Infusion runs only infused one piece of armor. We had someone on one run try to hijack the remains and demanded we pay him 1k. We aggroed mobs into him and refused to rez him after he died. :)
I also remember THK being hard and noone wanting to do the bonus. Scraping together enough gold for my first set of 15k by farming imps and golems. The first time I went to FOW (what, you can't take henchman? crap!). Getting an ecto and salvaging it because noone knew what they did yet.

I remember when HA and Emotes actually meant something in PVP.
I also remember the character screen with the fire glowing in the background and your characters stood there, and when you picked them, they walked towards your screen. GG Anet, you need to bring that back!
I also remember when superior absorption was close to 30-35k. LoL....the good ol days.

I remember getting my first sup rune (Inspiration) and selling it for 5k. I remember wondering how on earth anyone could EVER be able to afford Obsidian armour as ectos were around the 30k mark. I remember wondering what this Lions Arch place was all about that people were talking about. Lastly I remember the first time I travelled from Bergen Springs to ToA. Unfortunately since then the community has taken a large portion of the fun out of this game.

I remember the march glitch. obsidians, ectos, sup vigors and absorption were being sold at 250g.
They rolled it back :\ :p
I remember a merch glitch that was not rolled back and tons of people bought thousands of ecto for pennies and instantly became high rollers (I was at work...).
I remember learning to solo farm (before 55 builds became the norm) using Divine Boon + RoF + Zealots Fire spam. :ninja:
I remember a thriving market/demand for almost any item you obtainted including non-max mods and non-perfect items. :D
I remember when certain skins were rare and people would actually want weapons that weren't 15>50 20/20 +30. I remember greens ruining many of these rare skins. I remember inscriptable items ruining many additional rare skins. :(
Ahh the good ole' days...

Heres some things I remember from when I started playing GW since day one. (I don't play anymore)
In no particular order:
No one knew what ecto was and people sold it to merchant for a whole 100g.
When prices for everything were low and when 500g seemed like a lot.
When in Tomb of the Primeval Kingdom, now HA, parties were made using anyone with random invites. I remember about 2 weeks after the game was released and I just made it to Dragons Lair with my pve char, I decided to go to the ToPK and joined a party thinking this was another mission. On our first run we made it to HoH but didn't win. I remember asking so many questions as to where are we, why are we here fighting people not monsters and why there were so many Koreans with weird names. We made a good amount of fame.
I also remember the craziness over FDS, fellblade and chaos axes.
When Europe was the easiest teams to beat in GVG.
When everything was new, exciting and interesting having done it for the first time.
Good times.

i remember america having favor all day and night.
i remember daily updates, and the addition of sorrows furnace.
the monk strike that took place in thk.
when you could join a pug with near 100% chance of completion.
when you saw a person with fow, you thought that it was a person from anet.

Fighting Korean spirit spammer teams in HoH...and losing
When every single team in PVP was a bunch of IWAY warriors
Taking henchmen to a guild battle because, hey, they can't be THAT bad
Losing THK 10+ times and being elated when a guild monk was on
Thinking SF was going to completely reinvigorate the game for me
Last, wondering wtf a mini pet was when I got on after a 6 month break or so

Ahh... I feel so depressed now.
I remember when I first arrived in Ascalon, after searing, and exploring it for hours to find new outposts.
I remember when I first arrived in Droknar's Forge, I was so proud. I then farmed for hours to get my platemail set.
I remember joining a guild where people where happy and where it didn't seem like a competition.
I remember when you could find a good PUG and succeed almost everytime.
And above all, I remember when the community was friendly and mature. There wasn't mass ammount of immature brats running around spamming horrible jokes and profanity. The game truly decreased in quality, especially in the past year. So many good memories :(

June 2005
"Changed Signet of Capture so that it now targets dead boss monsters. When you use the signet, you are presented with a menu of all of the dead boss monster's skills, and can capture any skill of your choice. This eliminates the need to keep boss monsters alive while trying to capture their skills, and will substantially reduce the difficulty of capturing certain skills that are rarely cast by boss monsters."

I remember waiting for the Summer Update leading to the opening of Sorrow's Furnace.
I remember the first green weapons.
I remember the very first Icy Dragon Swords.
I remember when half-eaten masses looked like Ectos.
I remember when Silver Dye was worth up to 5k.
I remember when there used to be 2 Gwens in Pre Searing.
I remember when you had no idea or indication other than animation for what an opponent was casting.

the monk strike that took place in thk.
That now seems so long ago, still remember a bunch of them hanging out at Fishermen's Haven - on that little Island.
Getting my first character through the game without a max weapon, didn't see one drop until after I got through.
lol - just remembered, first char fighting from Yak's to Beacon's, via Ice Tooth Cave. Friend told me about the 2 missions in Northern Shiverpeaks after. Did the same thing from Bergen Hot Springs to Druid's Overlook.
Looking back, that was fun. Get in a group or hench it and head out a portal.
Probably my favorite memory was when a friend and I henched it from Camp Rankor to Beacon's Perch. Finding a Statue of Grenth in Lornar's Pass. I loved playing in the Southern Shiverpeaks.
Selling stacks of wood and glittering dust in Droknar's Forge , monks and necros were always buying.
Days to be fondly remembered and not seen again I'm afraid. Still play, mostly because a few friends still do and we do still have fun - most of the time.

May 27, 2007, 07:57 AM
I remember not knowing that Elite skills existed, until I got the the Desert and captured my first one, Marksman's Wager.
I remember selling 15 wood to someone in Ascalon City, because he was saying that he was buying all wood, and I thought 15 was a fair bit.
I remember getting sad seeing Post-Searing for the first time, and how pretty it wasn't anymore. I also remember reaching Kryta, and taking screenshots everywhere because I thought it was so pretty.
I remember a kind soul giving me, a level 8 Ranger, a max damage gold longbow (no bonuses); in the days that having a max damage weapon meant something, and a low level character was almost guaranteed to be a new player.
I remember purchasing Res Signet in Ascalon City, because I didn't do even half the quests in Pre-Searing.

Anyways, I remember mostly how fun it was being a total noob... I still play, but the freshness of it all was quite great the first time through Prophecies. Factions, and certianly not Nightfall, never had the "magic" for me. I still make almost all of my characters in Prophecies.

I'm playing guild wars for almost 2 years and played it A Lot
I miss the time when i played with my elementist in pre searing and it was so fun to see the flowers ,going to post searing and getting in ascalon with a lot of missions. It was so excited for me.
I miss the time when we all could play in the missions with pugs and not hero or hencmens. It was so fun to do Kryta missions with people :)
I miss the helping part of people.
I miss : The older template skin of guild wars
I remember: The buy ecto's for 250g time , No keys for chests
I remember : Totpk with the competive plays with no care about rank
A-net screwed a lot of things up
Phrozenflame
May 28, 2007, 02:36 PM
I hope the Anet is reading this one....They added alot of new stuff, new items etc etc....but in process of doing it they lost out the 'essence' of what guild wars was all about.
I hope GW:EN tries to put back what we have lost :).
- I hope there are some human-only missions where you are not allowed to show your titles/ranks.
- I remember playing PvP when there were Ele lightning spike build..chian lightning and bang 4 opponents dead!
- Where I sold I think a goodrare brute sword for 2k omg :/ [lvl 12!]
- Free chests
- I sold black-dye in pre-searing for 70g! :'(
- Pre-searing was so beautifull...
- When people used to play the game, not trade, I must admit I earn more money now trading than playing, what can I do, everything is so over-farmed etc, I need my FoW :D
- How the entire world was pissed when protective bond was it? got nerfed.
- When factions came and I hated it lol
- Monk Strike at THK! and even the Anet people came and got mixed with players.
- Where forming teams was fun and you actually needed skilled people.
- When I was like Akh!! This guy is the Lich!!
- When I got ub3r confused with storyline because I did a run to droks :/ , I re-did several missions to get a hang of it.
Alot more..
By far this has been one of the best posts we have seen in several weeks...I hope Anet recaptures the 'essence' what guildwars was all about. I dont wish to criticise Anet, but the focus from thiere strength of GW 'team-play' shifted to differentiating the newer campaigns by adding Heroes etc. Now I think I get some idea why GW-EN will be the last part.
PLS re-capture the essence of Prophecies. Quit with the running restrictions, Nobody wants to repeat what they have already done....or something like that.
Thank You

May 28, 2007, 08:15 PM
I remember many of these things.
The monk strike in THK was the funniest, it was at the height of monk snootiness when THK was the ultimate noob filter with people making 10+ attempts before getting through. I don't know how many times I've been in groups scolded by monks for not doing things right up to their expectations just before they zone out.
Not until I started to play a monk who would have to chase Wamo's into the enemy aggro to keep them alive and then have them pitch a fit when I failed or got myself in trouble trying to save them from their own stupidity.
But the Runners Academy for the Droks run from Beacons Perch was something else. Not an official place mind you, but advertised on this forum and you had to contact the members of this guild in-game to arrange your training. You had to be a lvl 20 W/Mo with Superior Vigor and Absorbtion, and had to sport a certain set of skills including Mending and a Dolyak Signet. After paying a certain fee, you would be taken by the experts down the run and shown how to do it. Then you could charge people a small fortune for the run.
I did not participate in this particular piece of tutoring and the Drok's run has changed a great deal since then....

Started when GW Profecies went retail. Loved my Elementalist until they gelded him into oblivion. I loved taking on monsters 6 lvls above me and winning, going to a new town and there was noone there for several hours because noomne knew it was there, running the sanctum cay mission with my Ranger before they fixed the boat scene. Now all I do is log on to see if friends are there and talk a few minutes then log off. No fun anymore.

Oh, how fun and exciting the pve world was to me back then. The music and environment added with the nice graphics made the game such a nice thing to play. I'm suprised that I used to played for hours and hours everyday and ended up taking like half a year to finish the game on my first character.
Random arenas was a good memory as well. I spent a helluva lot of time playing it. oh yea, and I also miss the ol' login screen too =/. It had nice music along with it.

Probably one of my favorite memories was when I pressed M in Post-Searing and said "Look at the size of this place! I can't wait to explore it all!" When I was done with the game, I was bummed when I realized that only about a little more than half of all the map was used.
Same here, but what I could explore was fun none the less.
I also remember the first time I beat prophecies. 3 of our group members dropped out as soon as we got into the mission area, but for some reason we kept going and beat the last mission. I was on my mesmer and i'm glad I decided to bring a perma rez.
I wish I would of added the ones that stuck with it, I wonder if they still play.

I remember 100 Blades NOT being an elite

I remember waiting anxiously for the next "preview weekend" back in 2004.
I remember people waving their goodbyes and saying "cya next month!" when a preview weekend was over

I remember leaving pre-searing too early, because my friend was a bit ahead of me, and therefore got wiped by 4 grawls during a quest just outside Ascalon City. Made me think again abou how fast I wanted to progress in this game.
Or ending op in the Crystal Desert before I had seen the Jungle, because I had taken the shortcut by walking directly to Sanctum Cay. Even before the cartography title was released, I already was scraping walls, and I told to myself: "You are not leaving this Kryta-Area before you have mapped every little bit" :)

Oh wow you guys, this really brings back memories.
I really remember my first character. I was a R/E because the book claimed that they could dish out elemental damage along with have a pet. I always brought firestorm with me. Then by the time I got to LA, I remember asking my guild whether I should keep using firestorm or switch to meteor shower. I was then baffled when my energy bar turned gray, I wondered if it was a bug.
The monk strike was the best, because of that I decided to make my monks. Yes monks, I have two monks now =D.
I remembered when I was trying to ask people how I could become a crafter to make money. I actually saved every item that dropped for me. 12-15 swords or random stuff that looked pretty.
I remember laughing at myself when I saw the price of a superior vigor (50k) and superior absorption (100k+). I also was baffled when my guildies were like yay I got my 15k armor. I was like huh 15k! for armor! wow I would be rich to have 1k. Then he told me it was 15k per piece. I thought he was joking.
I still miss the old loading screen. I really miss Old Tyria. The music, kryta, ascalon, and shiverspeaks.
Many people may critize newbs, but my god it was really fun being one. The world seemed so big and everything wasn't about builds, speed, and money but just adventuring.

Can anyone tell me what attribute refund points are as i was late into GW and didn't start playing till after factions.
Shanaeri Rynale
May 30, 2007, 11:34 PM
Every time you changed an attribute, either up or down it cost you a 'point'. When you ran out of 'points' you could'nt change any attribute anymore.
You earned more 'points' by gaining XP. I think it was 1 for every 250XP you got. I also seem to remember the maximum number of 'points' you could have was 24.
As you can imagine it led to some frustration, esp if you got stuck in an unworkable build.

Refund points
100k Sup Abs
Keyless chests (particularly the one RIGHT outside Grotto)
1.5k and 15k armors looked the same
ZF triggering on Cyclone Axe
RA Island with the shark
First Elite capture (Poison Arrow)
First 15k Armor (Druid's 15k when they put the skin in and dying it the un-saturated black)
Salvaging a +30 off an R9 15>50 Storm Bow (I still kick myself about that)
Seeing FoW Armor for the first time (Male Warrior and Female Necro)
Not knowing about missions and going on a "trek" from Ascalon City through the Northern Shiverpeaks with Henchs. I got Frostbound armor and had to look up a map, squinting at the details all the while getting lost and dying to those Gargoyle Mesmers.
Actually trying to farm Undead Horde and reaching 60 DP, rezzing, and hoping the villagers can save the town.
When I got 3 Sup Abs from Ettins and selling them 90k+.
Balthz Aura stacking and Lulu
Spirit Spam
No one wanting a Ranger when SF first came out (heh)
ToPK Greens (Victo's Shield and Axe) going for insane prices. Seeing the Ogre-slaying Knife for the first time.
Replaying Pre-Searing and feeling like a big man because I knew what was going on.
Reading that you can skip a part of the quest where you get Althea some gifts.
Restarting the Charr quest at that temple with the Ashes when I only have 15 DP.
Wishing I had Ranger Master Nente's armor.
Not know how charming an animal works in Pre-Searing.
Trying to cap Animate Bone Fiends in a Krytan quest, on my Ranger, but utterly failing.
Having my Ranger run as an MM.
Contemplating my Ranger skill bar in Bergen Hot Springs, since I had Backfire and Empathy on, and not knowing if I want to drop them or not.
Meeting Willa the Unpleasant for the first time.
Getting excited about going to the Ring of Fire Islands.

Been playing since a couple of months after the retail release, but I remember thinking pre-searing was THE game. I remember getting to Ascalon for the first time, and seeing "WTS purple sword" and "WTS purple staff." I thought, "Why are people dying their weapons purple?!"
I remember taking about a month to get to level 20 on my first character (ranger) because it was fun to take your time. I remember not being able to get into a FOW group to save my life! And then creating a warrior so I could go, and then getting rejected by one group leader because I had pigmail on... Then I discovered griffon farming. :D
I remember the monk strike, and trying a dozen times before completing THK. I remember when people were selling "pink" and "white" dye. Attribute point refunds. When ettin rune farming first came out. The campfire login screen. Being so surprised that I captured an elite for my secondary profession. Wondering how people were typing out their health and energy so fast. Accused a monk in a FOW group of typing it when he pinged that he had 55 health. Unlocked chests. Pre- green weapons. Wanting a superior absorption so bad. How leet getting to Droks felt.

I havent been around since the beginning (playing for 20 months now), but I have some very fond memories, like being shocked after going post-searing . . . I had thought that the pre-searing map was the entire game map, and thought THAT was big, lol. Also, when I got to post, looking to buy absolutely every weapon I could, since there seemed to be so many, and then the first time I saw a max gold weapon, and being in awe of how much damage they dealt, and then later, the same with green weapons. I also remember my two Razorstone drops when I first made it to SF, when they were worth 100k+. I also remember the MM's with amazing numbers of minions, and starting my Necro for the single purpose of raising hordes of undead, just for the coolness of it. It has been sad seeing Necros get nerfed further and further, but I still have mine. On my first go through the game, with my mesmer, I beat the game without getting to the jungle, as I just sort of wandered wherever. Then going through the Jungle, after a Fow team politely suggested I finish the rest of the game, get ascended, and then try again for FoW. People seemed nicer, and not have all the GW info at my fingertips on wiki and such . . . I suppose I miss being surprised by new enemies, weapons and locales more than anything else.

I remember sigils being 60k+
In a guild battle, you would also lose rating when a player died.
PUG were awesome.
me paying 10k for a monk in THK.
playing with guild members, because it was teamwork.
looking at warrior FoW, and thinking "is he God??"
all the old farming builds.
thinking "what game can compete with GW?"
all the old guilds that did gvg and rocked with original builds (seeing adrenaline spike)
you could play in HoH with pugs.
selling my superior vigor on accident to the merchant when it was 100k.
khylo.
the prophecies log in screen with the campfire.
there's so much more. people were friendly, and enjoyed helping other people out. Anet seriously needs to bring some stuff back, because GW is slowly dying, and hopefully EotN will change it.

Don't remember 100k+ sup absorption, but i remember them as 30K+, remember them as being all damage, not just physical
Remembering being surprised that Rurik died as skipped cutscenes
Not being able to get a group in desert with lvl16 E/Mo due to Cay run
Healing through Gates of Kryta with E/Mo whilst having friend tell me that I can't monk as I don't have Divine Favour
Having no idea what tanking was on my War
Not having any elites on any of my chars until Glint
Thinking how cool this game looks and how much fun it is. Only other game of same kind of type was EQ
Friend telling me that lvl 5 was a good level to go to post, so reaching lvl5 in a Necro, going into post (without collector armour), dying a lot, and deciding that it wasn't much fun. Not played a necro since. No real reason either

Hahah great thread, lots of things in here I haven't thought in a long time. Miss the old starting screen for sure.
Starting the day after release and pre-searing towns being packed.
Getting to Gates of Kryta with my ele and taking a good two weeks just farming lightning drakes with a guildmate.
Gryphon farming and subsequently getting 15k glads for my w/mo (a great day)
First trip into UW and talking to the ghost right at the start. Right away starting 2nd trip to UW on my expense!
The fun and frustration with PUGs at times.
Edit: Also how much trouble I had with my doppleganger when I first fought him. I tried changing my build and ended up with a really crap one and running out of refund points and having to go explore so I could redo my build again! heh.

I remember going from being poor to going permanently over 100k from farming ettins back when sup absorption was 100k, sup vigor was 70k, and sup monk runes were 20k, and not many people knew about ettin farming yet. :D
I remember when green weapons were added to the game and after much effort and a long time, the first green I got was the one I wanted most - the yakslapper. I don't think I've ever been as excited about a drop.
I remember when I created my first character as a N/W because my boyfriend thought that health stealing and extra energy would be better for a warrior than strength and extra armor... I also remember thinking that my boyfriend was a skilled player at the time. :p

R.I.P.
actually i'm still trying to figure out a way to use it. been thinking with a ranger hero doing greater con and winter then using mantra of frost but it's kinda clunky.
i don't know if anyone else has the same hate for ascalon (after playing through it, then playing through it with the friends that weren't online, then playing through it again with friends that are new to the game)
since it was the only starting area.
lol, capping was great. i don't remember how many times i capped some inane crap that i already had. lol, monks charging to play missions.
/sigh. for some reason you got me missing the pre-cu swg too (i know a lot of swg players came to gw).

brother, if you were here for that, you wouldn't be saying that. i've waited almost an hour in a group while waiting for a monk. that's why i learned how to use the hench ai (before heroes) and blew players off.
for all the, "this group is awesome!" groups you get into, there were about 5-10, "how did these idiots get this far?" groups.
thk was definitely the choke-point for idiots. i felt way better back then getting into groups on the rof islands since the half-wits were back in thk wiping groups still.

I've been meaning to do one of these topics for a while because i keep remenicing about the old stuff about GW like....
Atrribute refund points and the pain of having to change builds
When necromancers could ahve as many minions as their were dead bodies
When Superior Absorbtion was 100k
When 15k tormentors was the same as 1.5k tormentors and there was the great necro protest in LA
When you could farm minos and griffons till the cows came home and the retarded amount of bots that came in and out of Augry Rock ID1
When you could actually get run through the game and not have to do missions
When there were actually people in Wilds D1 and they needed the missions done
When Sorrows Furnace came out and Flints Wand went for insane amounts of money
When Skill balances were exciting
When you could echo Meteor Storm and have the monsters stand in both of them and not move
When protective bond was found on a skill bar
The first Guild Wars Halloween
When THK was rediculously hard and it taking me 14 tries to beat it
Fighting undead Rurik and going WTF HE"S A ZOMBIE!
When Ecto was 13k
When The Last Pride [evil] was still around
When IWAY dominated HoH (not HA) and Your Math Teacher [math] held halls for hours
When Team Arenas was next to Droknars Forge and getting pwned in Ascalon arenas because peopel would get run to droks, get high armor, cap an elite skill, and pwn the crap out of everyone
When no one wanted a mesmer (oh wait....)
When you pikced up the book in FoW and all monsters would attack you
