View Full Version : Ranger Margonite Farming
DvM
Apr 07, 2007, 02:47 PM
Hello everybody,
First a little note: I did not make this build myself, all I did was combining a build and a farming spot from 2 other people and I wrote a guide, I do not take credit for thinking up the builds.
Originial thread: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10138686
Post that gave me the idea(in the same thread): http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2693153&postcount=22
ok, now we have had that, time to farm!!!
Verani's Solo Margonite farming!
Getting the Quest!
To be able to do this farm you will need the quest: Battle of Turei's procession* http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Battle_of_Turai%27s_Procession
You can get this quest from Mirza Veldrunner in Turei's procession, but you will first need to complete: Ancestral Anguish* and Crossing the Desolation.
But you will also need a quest from Zhed form the command post, namely Centaur Concerns: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Centaur_Concerns
(Thanks to K R I S S Y for pointing this out to me.)
Follow the steps on Guildwiki and you should be fine.
*note: Some of these quests are follow up quests, you will first need to complete others to be able to get these ones.
The Build
Splinter Weapon <-- Really needed
Barrage <-- Really needed
Edge of Extinction <-- Really needed
Zojun's Haste
Natural Stride
Dodge
2 Optional slots
I Use Winnowing and Wielder's Strike
I have not looked at any skills that will help me kill the last boss, but you could probably replace Winnowing and Wielder's Strike for saySavage Shot and Apply poisen.
You will need a Fast recharging run skill, so you can make quick hit and run strikes. I cycle through the skills in the following order: Natural stride->Zojun's Haste-> Natural stride->Dodge->Natural Stride->Zojun's->Etc...
Attribute Setup
7+1 Beast Mastery (Use a +4 headpiece when setting Edge of Extinction)
4+3 Expertise
7+1 Wilderness Survival (Use a +3 headpiece when setting Winnowing)
8+4 Marksmanship (play around with this, not really needed)
12 Channeling
Equipment
Weapons
Zealous flatbow of xxx
Zealous for the energy management(should not have too many problems with that)
Flatbow because of the high arc, gives you time to get away.
Vamperic shortbowof xxx
Use this to kill of annoying last mobs, vamp helps kill them a bit faster.
Armor
Any armor can be used
Recommended is Druids armor or armor with Radiant insignias.
The Farm!
Go to Venta's Cemetary, fFrom there Head north into Turei's procession.
Follow this Path
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5819/waytothebattlefielddj1.th.jpg (http://img411.imageshack.us/my.php?image=waytothebattlefielddj1.jpg)
You should see Mirza Veldrunner on the way, west from him is a ressurection shrine, do not forget to activate it.
Walk to this point so the first wave of margonites will attack the Horsies.
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5696/activatingthemargonitesvj6.th.jpg (http://img411.imageshack.us/my.php?image=activatingthemargonitesvj6.jpg)
Walk back a bit and to the side, wat for the margonites to slay most of the Centaurs and plant your spirits.
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/8824/plantyourspiritshereum5.th.jpg (http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=plantyourspiritshereum5.jpg)
Then walk to the middle of the path, select a margonite from the group, one that is a bit in the middle. Do this by pressing C(default) and then Tab(default) till you get one thats nice in the middle.
The hard part! now with VIDEO!
Video of the run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM7ZnZtYugY
Thanks to andrewf for sharing this with us.
Now this part is a bit tricky, you need to get the right feeling for it.
Put on splinter weapon and use barrage on the selected Margonite, immediatly run a bit back using 1 of your run skills. In the very first wave some executioner smight follow you for a bit, don't worry, they almost always do this, they'll go back.
Cast Splinter weapon again, and barrage the same margonite again, run back again with 1 of your speedboosts on. (If you are having troubles with this, whisper me ingame and I'll try to help.) T
he entire group should die in about 5-9 barrage attempts, they sometimes die a little bit slower due to the margonites Aegises.
NOTE: when firing the last barrage at a group, the one they will die after, do not run away TOO fast, else you wont gain EXP nor get loot!!!!!!!!
There will be a total of 4 waves, the first 3 waves will exsist out of 3 groups which each exist out of 8 margonites. just follow the patern given above and they will all die quite fast. This totals out to about 82 margonites, most of them will dorp stuff, and give 168 exp a piece (without scrolls)
After these three groups, there will be 1 last group with a boss in it, use the same tactics, however, the boss will not die. I'm still trying to figure out how to kill him. Any idea's on this one would be appreciated.
Inbetween the waves of margonites I try to pick up my loot, as the last gorup will have 1 survivor who will kill you pretty quickly, almsot every run will leave you with a full inventory, netting you anywhere between 3-5K.
Picture of the loot:
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/888/lootft1.th.jpg (http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lootft1.jpg)
there is way more loot then this, I ran away too fats on a wave, and already picked up a bit, ill try to get all of it in another screenshot.
Everybody have fun farming, I hope I helped a little bit, and yet again, I do not take credit for this, as I used other people's idea's and builds.

Is this possible with a Rt/R?
If a r/rt can do it, rt/r can do it faster due to more damage from splinter weapon.
Now I have to update my rt/r dead sword farming thread to include this.
Good job finding another spot that this build is useful in.:D
EDIT: If you would want to kill the boss, you could try taking nightmare weapon and dual shot, along with lightbringers gaze, I have not tried it yet, just trying to come up with ideas. :D

You will firts have to do ''crossing the desolaiton'' like I said in my post, it is a quest you get after doing all the vabbie missions.
Tehn you do 4 follow-up quests, and then you can take this one ;)

Edit i have done kondur :p
ehm, Rihlon Refuge i havent done, better do that ;)

Great job, just tried it. If you are having trouble with the last mob(s) or boss you can always flag heroes/henchies at the start of the map and bring them over to help so you dont have to leave loot on the ground.

I am having the same trouble as others. I beat the game and I only get the one quest offered. After I do the breed quest then it just stops. Maybe it requires other things or maybe it requires for you not to beat the game but I know i cant do it so whatever. Nice find though.

:D your welcome, and for the rit/r all you need is max channeling and beast mastery, EoE is the only spirit you will need 2 33% running buff and a 25 % running buff to run by them to clump them up. After you all that plant EoE and do the hit and run trick. Rinse and Repeat, if done rite, you kill the group in 4-5 hits and EoE will mass kill everything. For the last group that contain the boss, follow the same directions, but rite after the group dies from EoE use Nightmare weapon then Wielder's Strike and attack and use W's Strike when done recharging and smae goes for nightmare untill boss is dead.
I hope this can help ppl out. Enjoy and happy easter ;)
I forgot, when running by to clump them up your energy will be drain to 0-3 energy so becareful, make sure you speed buff last long enuff and make sure you are standing on higher grounds then the monsters.

for those of you that are lazy, a similar spawn will take place in the quest "Between a Rock" which is alot easier to get to (NOT TO THE SPAWN POINT, only to the quest)
but the spawn is alot less than the Turai one

Yes, and you will also have 4 other quests you have to do before you can take it, but they do not take that long.

This build works very well. If you bring Troll Unguent instead of Wielder's Strike you can tank the last 1 Margonite or the Boss and pickup loot. There's also a Merchant in the area so I sell everything and go pickup the rest. =)

To kill the boss, I just bring along henchies and heros. I leave them by the rez shrine, and kill all of the margonites until only the boss is left, and then I have them kill him so I can pick up all of my drops. Since they are so far out of range, they do not steal any of your drops, just the gold.

Thats what i do, seeing as they hardly drop gold coins anway, you only rerally loose 50g a run.
Does the boss drop a green?
im guessing no, seeing hes in a quest :p

That is another advantage to taking heros/henchies, if you ever have only 1 or 2 left, just have your henchies kill them, then post them by the rez shrine again so they do not steal drops from the next mob.:D

I've done a few runs with my Rit/R. I average about 12k xp and about 2k in drops. I'm lazy so I don't salvage anything and only merch what I can carry. An EoE drop usually lasts me one mob and I flag my henchies away until I need them to take out the boss at the end.
It really is too bad that we don't get LB points for this, but the 12k xp is nice.

Which leaves me with a 3 groups of Margos to kill..... So i kill them. But.... I only end up gettin 1 Groups loot? Any 1 else had this?

Apr 08, 2007, 07:08 PM
I have farmed this like 20 times so far, no sign of anti farm, full inventorys every time, about 1 gold per run, mostly runes.
The groups something don't drop anything, this is because you run away to fast and your out of range when they are dieing, then you aint getting any loot.

He didn't abandon the quest while in town after killing the boss, and without thinking he zoned and talked to the guy again and just clicked, thus accepting the reward. Going quite fast on Ritualist, even with only 2 Lightbringer. Usually goes ok but its hopeless at killing Executioners when they survive, happened a couple of times now, takes ages to pick up the loot without them killing me first.

For that, I flag my henchies out of range when I'm killing them, and if there's 2-3 survivors, I take my henchies to kill 'em then flag em away. Did the same with the boss.
Makes things much faster, and I still get ~4k a run.

for the ppl who has alrdy done this quest or accidentally took the reward (like me), theres another quest in halls of chokin or something like that u can farm. and the reward thign is safe, the quest fails and u dont have to abandon. the quest is "protect the learned". gotta run a bit to halls, talk to 8 scholars around the halls, then run to the entrance of halls near where the flower enemies are at. theres a dark portal thing there where the 70+margonites spawn. jus let their red dots go in your minimap, no need to get em in ur bubble, and they will start to go attack the scholars. the scholars are at the very end of halls, they will kill all npcs on the way, so jus hide somewhere and hang out for a min or two. then they will group up into two groups and then u can do your splintbarragin. if you dont go to the beginning and aggro them all, they will come in waves. i think gwiki said in waves of 2 groups and like 6 per group (6waves, 12groups total).not as good as turai farm so if u got that quest still active, stick with that.

Prolly the best site for Rangers.
Oh that place. Been a while since i've heard anyone mention it.
I'm not surprised either... Some of its incomplete. Some of its not even correct. Its been a long, long time since Damage Reduction on Warriors effected everything, including armour ignoring skills, but yet its still listed on the site.

Well no gold drops but not only is this an easy farm one of the items drops caught my eye, check out the screenshoot, I'll give you a hint, it starts with an F and ends with a blade:cool: Now a gold one of those would be worth having. and at least 2 whites dropped in my first run.

Yeah if you get lucky with the Aegis' a Rit can drop a whole mob in 3 Barrages. Doesn't take you very long using the build listed. I run 0 Marksmanship because theres not really any point. What Splinter/EoE doesn't kill, either Nightmare Weapon finishes off or there was never any hope to begin with.
Think in the 5 or 6 runs i've done i've had 3 gold Margonite Armours/Tunics/Robes drop. Its not too bad if you want Silk, Linen or Leather, i usually just salvage all white armour, salvage any decent runes/insig on my ranger and merch the rest. The onlu really valuable things its gained me so far is 1 White Dye and a Major Vigour.

in quite a few runs, i've gottan a LOT of golden runes, some crap some decent, 2 monk ones, a major vigor. Also ALOT of minor runes and insignias, which adds up quite alot.
I also have 2 stacks of marognite masks :D working on third ^_^

heres a pic of the protect the learned spot. when they all settle down, the west group has approx 28-30 dudes, and the east group will have 32-34. also, where they spawn also always spawns a vabbi chest.

Check out the trader that collects these. He has a -5 +30 shield, I was finally able to pimp out all my Koss's, like 8 of them ;)
EDIT:
Btw that above screen looks nice, did you kill them all? I noticed theres no clerics, that could make the run go fairly smooth.

oh and there 1 cleric :p :D
*Edit*
Takes a while 2 set up, you ave 2 speak to 8 ppl in the Hall, then aggro the 1st lot, wait for them to settle then agrro the second lot, then kill them, if u want the chest u have 2 run back to the enterance of the halls -_-
Heres what i got

I don't remember doing that quest...
Doesn't look particularly quick to set up, you'd probably be faster clearing out the Turai's quest. Although there is definatly the bonus that theres no boss lieing in wait to kick your ass when you come to collect the remaining drops.

Could someone maybe elaborate on how to get all those margonites to spawn? tryed it a few times and I only have 1 group coming each time.
nevermind, found out myself, farm is kinda boring though, takes long to set up, maybe you could do it way faster duo, but still...

I picked up the quest and only had one group spawn and the group was made up of only 5 margonites. If someone could please explain how to get them all in one spot that would be really helpful. I would also like to know if anybody has compared this farm to the Turai farm in terms of which is more profitable considering the amount of time it takes to do each run. Thanks in advance.

Its bugged. I had a look on the wiki discussion about it. When you complete Centaur Concerns he won't give you the next quest. If you go back to town and come back to him the next quest activates even without you having it. Just take it then while the quest dialog is running, finish the quest and carry on.

the protect the learned quest takes long to set up yeah. the whole quest takes like maybe 10min to do. lol like a <2min to run there then maybe <5 minutes to set up then <2min to pwn them all. this is jus a secondary option if u messed up on the turai quest and accepted the reward. wat i do is talk to the scholars in clockwise so i end up back at the beginning after the last scholar, then i go near the portal and see them all spawn and jus chill out somehwere, let them pass me. then i get the chest. then jus walk near enough to either side so u see their red dots on ur minimap. thats enough to make them go forward. if u see the scholars droppin fast, then they came in force. if they drop slow, then only a few attacked.
side note - maybe its jus my luck but im getting better drops here. my best drop at turai was a couple sup scythe runes and like 10 radiant insigs (but those are kind of decent value now) in a lil over 10 runs. here in halls, ive gotten perfect req 9 zealous enchant scythe, sup vig, 20/20sunder sword/bow and couple of decent insciptions.

I had a quick go earlier. My drops were absolutely awful... but it was only 1 try so... can't win em all.
Took a while to setup. But that'd probably get faster and faster as i got use to the locations of the Scholars rather than following the useless quest pointer. Once the Margonites settled though both mobs died in 3 Barrages each (even with a Ranger). Whether there are more enemies there or not is questionable... so is whether its faster or not. But since theres no Torment Weaver ther was no infernal boss to survive and kill you (i would check it using a high level EoE... but i did Turai's quest earlier).

takes about 3-4 minutes longer, still easily killable in 1 round of EoE, per group
Loot is crappy, get 1-2 lockpicks per run, 2-3 golds per run, maybe 5-10 whites and blues. Often 1 dye per run, and maybe 1 skill tome every 2-3 runs. And about 21K of experience.

That's not bad, i guess they are going to make us work for the gold by selling to other players and not merchants.
I just tried the run in HM, the groups kept on following me and seem like they are healing a lot faster. Did you use the original build or modified? If modified, can you share the build?
Thanks for the feedback.

I drop the margonites in ~4 barrages, 5 if something goes wrong.
Sometimes they just charge at you, as if they suddenly spotted you before you do a barrage, there doesn't seem to be a reason. But when you run away after a barrage, you go up the path till you get to a small chunk of rocks and make sure you don't shoot at the mob again before they've grouped up. This doesn't happen very often though.
Anyway, I use a modified build, and it works like a charm.
Splinter WeaponBarrageZojun's HasteDodgeNatural StridePredatory SeasonEdge of ExtinctionTranquility
Beast Mastery 9(+1)
Expertise 5(+1)
Wilderness Survival 8
Marksmanship [Leftovers](+1)
Restoration Magic 12
(This is just my rune setup, but is makes no difference if you have any minor runes or not, because of the masks.)
I use an Ironwing Flatbow, and three different headgears.
An Experise (1+3) for the running to the spot, and to use while barraging.
A Beast Mastery (1+3) for when putting up Predatory and EoE
A Wilderness Survival (1+3) for when putting up Tranquility
And btw, if you drop all the margonites except for the boss you get exactly 24k of xp, but that requires a lucky spawn/shot/timing/whatever... and doesn't happen very often.
As long as Tranquility is up, and you run up to the small chunk of rocks by the path, Aegis will run out before your next barrage hits.
So if they aren't too slow about grouping back together, you can drop them before Tranquility runs out, but sometimes the executioners have to spam Healing Signet a couple times before they regroup... (And Predatory Season is only their to reduce the healing, especially the one by the Reapers, as they heal the most)
And as soon as you've dropped a mob, go over and start putting up spirits asap (it's important that Tranquility comes up last because of it's short duration) and you'll have them up when the next mob has grouped.
Just remember to change headgear.
And sometimes, there is a survivor, but that's because of that enchantment they have making them immortal for ~10 seconds, but Tranquility helps to reduce the survivors. If there is one I usually just push on with the killing, but it can screw over the spawn if this happens.
That's just what I found to be the best option for Hard Mode, as this run is no where near worth it in Normal.
Hope you like it anyway

Ditto. If I do it correctly, they dont follow me at all after taking the hit. At times, if they do follow, its not that far.
For the king quest, I drop EoE at one corner of the hilltop, turn the camera around so I have the front view of my char, activate splinter, select closest target, click on barrage. As soon as the arrows are released, I click like mad in the opposite direction and activate speed boost. If done right, the arrows hit while I am already running, in which case they dont follow.
Takes me an average of 5-6 barrages to drop them. Get an average of 2 golds per run and dont do more than 5-6 runs in a day.
