I have both prophecies and factions, dont have nightfall yet, I also have 8 chars already, gotta delete 1 of them :S
anyway I wanna create a Mesmer and I wonder where would it be best to start with it, prophecies or factions?
I have most Mesmer skills unlocked already from my other chars so that wont be too much of a problem...
I'm leaning more towards factions as you can get to lvl 20 in shin ji island and than in kaineng I will be able to buy all those skills I unlocked to make it much easier to progress with, and I save the whole pre-searing crap. but I wanna hear your thoughts about it as well, gonna finish both campaigns in the end anyway...

If you are familiar with the skills from using mesmer secondary on other characters and have the gold to buy the skills, go with Factions.
If you are unfamiliar with the skills and/or don't have the gold for skills purchase, go with Prophecies. Do all the skills reward quests, learn the skills slowly, get to LA, jump over to KC for max armor and you are set.
For more extensive pro/con discussions, search for the other threads on this subject. Thank you for creating a mesmer.

(sigh) I know. I find it hard to write informally. Luckily, I don't talk like that. Or I don't think I do. I'll have to ask someone.

/agree with Darcy. I had no familiarity with the mesmer before making one in Factions. Although I was able to work through Factions rather quickly, I really think I would have been a better mesmer had I worked through Prophecies and learned the class at a slower pace.

it basicly comes down to face & hair options.
ohh and a good thing to remember is the fact that you get to do the second 15 attrib quest in c1 almost at the end of the game - compared to doing both on the nooby island in factions.

Its not that hard to get use to mesmer skills if you spend time practicing. To be a good mesmer you need experience, so practicing to familiarize yourself with the skills as well as being a mesmer is killing two birds with one stone.
For me I would like to create a Factions mesmer based on hair/face styles, but I would most likely get FoW for my mesmer and I'm still not use to seeing characters made in any expansion except prophecies in FoW. >.< (I don't have factions btw xD)

Do you want your Mesmer to look more Eastern or more Western?
Basically comes down to that. And of course, hair styles.

Factions is good because of the extremely rapid levelling. After finishing the noobie isle you can go to Tyria and get all the elites and skills that are actually good. But I do prefer the Proph or NF faces.

Look of your Mesmer is what I would think about. Prophecies is good for free skills, Factions for fast leveling.

Look would be my first choice, and then if you can get something for free why pay for it, unless again look/skin you would be settling for something lower then what you want.

created in in Factions, I'll probably get all the free skills from Tyria later, until than I'll just use the alternatives

Personally, I'd start in Prophecies. I like the hair/face options better and it allows you to unlock quite a few of your main skills for free. You can still take advantage of the Factions leveling by getting a run to LA and doing all the Kaineng City quests. If you start at about 4-5, you can easilly get to lvl 16 or so by doing those quests, and you don't even need to be born in Cantha to get them. Just take a full team of henchment and let them do the work for you. No sweat.

I'm glad I started in Prophecies as a Mesmer. By taking the game at a slower pace, you see more options the different classes have available to them by seeing different builds on different creatures.
In Factions, you still see that, but its after you're fully powered and have set yourself into your skills.
Its like this: You get to your full power faster in Factions, you learn what to do with it in Prophecies.

@ OP - Factions/NF characters can not get the skill reward quests in Prophecies. In fact, I don't think you can get any quests before LA, only the missions.
@ Arcanis - well said.

@Darcy:
Yes you can get skill rewards from Lion's Arch on. You just can't get rewards from quests in towns from Ruins of Ascolon to Kryta. However, you can get rewards (not skill rewards though) from the pathway from Kryta to Becon's Perch. Talk to Ranger guy at the end of the cave, then go back and talk to the other guy outside of the cave (towards Kryta) for the reward.
The only quest in Lion's Arch you cannot get is the Signet of Capture quest from Maliqui, as that quest is in Canthas.

I'd start any core profession in Factions from now on. Fast levelling, access to most skills, and it's relatively quick compared to Proph and Nightfall to access the port.
