I've been playing GW for over a year now (I have both campaigns) and I thought (after being impressed by one in a scrim the other day) that I'd start a Mesmer character. I have two questions though,:
Which campaign should the character be in? I prefer Factions, but not if I have to spend loads of gold and skill points unlocking basic Prophecies skills
Which secondary profession should I use? I don't want to put any attributes into it (except whatever is leftover after I allocate all my stats to FC, Domination, and Inspiration). My other chars (an Elem, a Ranger, and a lvl12 Wammo I don't play all that often) all have Monk as their secondary, just to get Resurrect. Is this an OK option for a Mesmer too?
The character will mainly be for PvE, but I want to be able to do a decent job in scrims and low-importance PvP matches too. Thanks :P

I would recommend starting your mesmer in Prophecies. Once you get your character to Lion's Arch you can jump to Cantha for better armor and quick leveling to 20. but the slow skill learning progression through Tyria can't be beat.
You learn which skills work together and which don't while facing lower level mobs. By the time you hit the Crystal Desert and the end of the skill quests, your mesmer will be the invincible character you envisioned, with a sure knowledge of what skills to equip for each situation.

I agree, tyria is alot better for skills. However, if you want to level up fast, i would reccomend cantha. I would reccomend it now, as you seem to have a few decent chars, and know how to figure out which skills/combo's work out :)

Most of the more popular elites are in Prophecies, with a few moderately far on into Factions (Expel and PD). Also, many of the basic skills are quite useful, so I'd go with proph as it gives you a stronger, cheaper skillset.
/Mo in PvE is fine. Other decent primaries are mainly /N (cc, hex spread), /E (gale, wb), /A (speedbuffs, return).

OK, thanks folks, I'll probably start in Tyria and then jump to Cantha as soon as I get to Lion's Arch, that way I get the improved skill set and the faster levelling. Thanks again

Just find yourself someone to run Tyria and just cap the cool elites/do the skill quests. Factions you will have to go through to beat, Tyria you can fast forward.

Yeah, that's what I did. Start in Tyria, get a run to LA, buy armor from Kanaing and maybe buy a couple Factions skills, then go cap Expel Hexes in Bukdeck and do some quests for fast xp. Then go back to Tyria and do all the quests and missions. Illusion is awesome in Ascalon too. Mantra of Persistence plus Conjure spam owns everything.
