The Guild Wars world is referred to as “Tyria” and it has been divided into four very different regions. Ascalon, the starting region with a very apocalyptic look, Northern Shiverpeaks, a snowy region filled with large mountains and underground passes, Kryta, a tropical paradise & The Maguuma Jungle, a dense jungle where only the brave survive. Each region has many different areas, of which can be classified as either Towns, Outposts or Explorable Areas. Towns are the trading and social hubs of Tyria, most often frequented when needing items, create a guild or merely wishing to socialize. Outposts are combat hubs, they are the starting point for quest based missions. Explorable areas often connect with towns and Outposts, their use is character development in nature (i.e. item harvesting).
